The Elevator Pitch: Why will you enjoy this new opportunity?
The newly formed Software-Defined Edge Division at Broadcom is on a mission to modernize the management plane for radio access networks (RAN)and the broader telco edge, by making it cloud native,developer friendly and AI/ML native.If you are a networking software developer with expertise in RAN OAM/FCAPS and RAN Optimization and want to play a technical leadership role in the team that is driving this mission forward, then this opportunity is for you. In this role, you will lead the architecture, design and development of various RAN management-plane services and APIsthat will be part of a new VMware product. You will work with fellow developers, ops engineers, system test engineers, product managers and SREs to turn them into production-ready software and deploy them incommercial 4G/5G networks across the world. In the process, you will work and innovate with the latest technologies in cloud, distributed systems, data pipelines and AI/ML, andcollaborate closely with experts in these fields. You willgainfirst-hand experience of building a new productand work in an environment that provides ample learning and career growth opportunities.
Success in the Role: What are the performance outcomes over the first 6-12 months you will work toward completing?
Within 30 days of joining, you willlearn the product value proposition and the product strategy. You will understand the current product architecture and dive deeper into its components. You will also set up your development environment and get familiar with the codebase and with building/operatingthe product.
Within 60 days of joining, you will design a small feature or a feature enhancement and implement, testand merge it with the product codebase. In the process, you will become familiar with the agile software development processes and practices being followed in the team.
Within 90 days of joining, you will be expected tostart designinga complex feature and drafting a comprehensive design document. You will also be expected to mentor junior developers and collaboratewith them to implement the feature.
Within 180 days, you will be expected to make your feature ready for commercial release and production deployment. You’d have addressed not just all the functional requirements, but also non-functional requirements related to quality and usability, including scalability, high availability, security, observability, debuggability and configurability.
Within 360 days, you will be expected to own a functional area within the product and become the go-to person in the team for that area. You’d be working with product managers and engineering leaders to contribute to the product roadmap for your area and influence the evolution of the product.
The Work: What type of work will you be doing? What assignments, requirements, or skills will you be performing on a regular basis?
Your regular activities may be modified to suit your professional strengths, but you can expect a variety of the following assignments:
Architect and design software services and APIs for RAN management, comprisingOAM/FCAPS, analytics and assurance,closed-loop optimization, integrations with RAN/EMS/SON systems and with core network and other external systems. This will involve gathering/understanding requirements and then using your expertise in these areas to draft high-quality architecture and design documents.
Lead feature development end to end from design to delivery, including mentoring junior developers in the team. This will require expertise in developing software using Go and Python, and sometimes Java or C++. This will also require familiarity with the agile software development life cycle and with being a feature lead. Exposure to Kubernetes/Docker and cloud platforms like AWS or Azure is preferred, although not mandatory.
Collaborate with fellow developers, ops engineers, system test engineers, product managersand other cross functional teamsto make your services/APIs carrier grade and production ready. This will require excellent collaboration skills and a team-first attitude.
Contribute standards/specifications to 3GPP, O-RAN, etc. as necessary and ensurethe design and implementation of the product is compliant with standards. This will require familiarity withhow such standards groups work and understanding of APIs/interface protocols anddata representation in JSON, protobuf, etc.
Support trial and deployment of the product in customer networks and partner environments and ensure success of the product with customers and partners. This will require a deep understanding of what drives great customer and partner experience.
What is the leadership like for this role? What is the structure and culture of the team like?
The hiring manager for this role is a Senior Technical Manager in Broadcom’s Software-Defined Edge division who leads R&D engineering for several telco products. Prior to joining Broadcom, he had co-founded a startup to commercialize his Stanford research on data-driven and software-defined radio access networks, which was acquired by VMware in 2019, which in turn was acquired by Broadcom in 2023. His team is distributed across US, Europe and India and follows a culture of collaborative innovation where everyone is encouraged to learn from and collaborate with each other, innovate with a fail-fast mindset and prioritize team’s success over individual accomplishments.

This role is in Bengaluru, Karnataka, India and will be based out of the VMware (now Broadcom) office in Kalyani Vista.
