Requirements

We are seeking a highly skilled Cassandra Subject Matter Expert (SME) to join our team and lead the design, implementation, and optimization of Cassandra databases in high-availability, 24x7 production environments. The ideal candidate will have extensive hands-on experience in managing Cassandra clusters, a proven ability to resolve complex incidents, and strong leadership skills to guide and mentor fellow engineers. As a Cassandra SME, you will also be responsible for automating database infrastructure using tools like Terraform, Helm, and optionally Ansible.

Key Responsibilities:

• Cassandra Database Management:
  

  • Design, deploy, and manage Cassandra clusters for production and non-production environments, ensuring high availability, performance, and scalability.
    
  • Perform regular database upgrades, backups, and patching to ensure optimal performance and security.
    
  • Fine-tune Cassandra configurations to optimize throughput, latency, and storage efficiency.
    

• Incident Management:
  

  • Proactively monitor and troubleshoot complex production issues, ensuring minimal downtime and quick resolution of incidents.
    
  • Lead the response to critical incidents, performing root cause analysis and implementing long-term solutions to prevent future occurrences.
    
  • Collaborate with other teams (DevOps, development, and operations) to resolve any database-related issues that impact application performance.
    

• Leadership & Mentoring:
  

  • Provide leadership and guidance to junior engineers, sharing best practices in Cassandra database management.
    
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for all Cassandra-related questions and issues, offering technical support to various teams.
    
  • Lead efforts to implement and manage Cassandra in a distributed, cloud-based infrastructure.
    

• Infrastructure as Code (IaC):
  

  • Develop and maintain Infrastructure as Code (IaC) scripts using Terraform and Helm to automate Cassandra cluster provisioning, scaling, and configuration.
    
  • Ensure Cassandra environments are fully automated and integrated with CI/CD pipelines, reducing manual intervention.
    
  • Optionally, use Ansible for further automation and configuration management.
    

• Operational Excellence:
  

  • Implement monitoring and alerting tools to ensure proactive identification of performance bottlenecks and potential issues in Cassandra clusters.
    
  • Establish and enforce best practices for database management, including backup strategies, disaster recovery planning, and security hardening.
    
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to align Cassandra operations with business goals and project requirements.
    

• Documentation & Continuous Improvement:
  

  • Maintain comprehensive documentation, including architecture diagrams, operational processes, and troubleshooting guides for Cassandra environments.
    
  • Continuously assess and improve Cassandra operations, adopting new technologies and methods to enhance performance and reduce operational costs.
    

Required Skills & Qualifications:

• Cassandra Expertise: Deep, hands-on experience with Apache Cassandra, including configuration, optimization, backup, recovery, and replication.
  
• Production Environment Experience: Proven experience managing Cassandra clusters in 24x7, high-demand, customer-facing production environments.
  
• Incident Management: Strong problem-solving skills with experience in diagnosing, troubleshooting, and resolving complex production incidents in a timely manner.
  
• Leadership Skills: Ability to lead and mentor a team of engineers, providing technical guidance and fostering a collaborative environment.
  
• IaC Expertise: Proficiency in using Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools such as Terraform, Helm, and optionally Ansible for automating Cassandra deployments and configurations.
  
• Automation & Monitoring: Experience in automating Cassandra operations and using monitoring tools to track database health, performance, and availability.
  
• Self-Motivation: A self-organized and highly motivated individual who can work independently and efficiently manage time and resources.
  
• Collaboration: Strong communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across departments.
  

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience with Ansible: Familiarity with Ansible for automating Cassandra configuration management is a plus.
  
• Cloud Platforms: Experience deploying and managing Cassandra in cloud environments such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud.
  
• DevOps & CI/CD: Experience integrating Cassandra databases with DevOps pipelines and continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) workflows.
  
• Scripting & Automation: Proficiency in scripting languages such as Python, Bash, or Java for automation and troubleshooting.
