Reports to: Principal

Location: Nalanda Vidyaniketan School, Vijayawada

Job Summary:

The Chess Coach is responsible for nurturing students' interest and excellence in chess through structured coaching, mentoring, and skill development. The role emphasizes logical thinking, concentration, and sportsmanship while preparing students for school, district, and state-level competitions.

Key Responsibilities:

• Player Development:
• Provide expert instruction and guidance to players at all skill levels to enhance their chess understanding and performance.
• Individual Coaching:
• Offer personalized coaching sessions focused on game analysis, openings, tactics, and strategic improvement.
• Group Instruction:
• Conduct group classes, workshops, and practice sessions for different age and skill levels.
• Tournament Preparation:
• Train students for inter-school and open tournaments, focusing on opening repertoires, tactical awareness, and game strategies.
• Game Analysis:
• Evaluate student games to identify strengths, weaknesses, and areas for improvement through detailed reviews.
• Opening Repertoire Development:
• Help players understand and build diverse opening repertoires with preparation against various strategies.
• Tactical & Strategic Training:
• Conduct exercises that improve tactical spotting, pattern recognition, and positional play.
• Endgame Mastery:
• Train players in essential and advanced endgame concepts to improve performance in critical stages of the game.
• Mental Preparation:
• Teach students focus, confidence, and emotional control to handle pressure during competitions.
• Competition Management:
• Guide students in selecting appropriate tournaments, handling registrations, and scheduling practice matches.
• Chess Literature & Resources:
• Recommend books, puzzles, and online resources to support self-learning and continuous improvement.
• Professional Development:
• Stay updated with current trends in chess coaching, tactics, and teaching methodologies.
• Community Engagement:
• Promote chess within the school and collaborate with external clubs or associations for events and tournaments.
• Parent Communication:
• Maintain transparent communication with parents on student performance, participation, and achievements.

Qualifications & Skills:

• Bachelor's degree (preferably in Physical Education, Psychology, or related field).
• Certified Chess Instructor or FIDE/AICF-rated player (preferred).
• Proven experience in coaching or competitive chess.
• Strong analytical, mentoring, and motivational skills.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
