An SMT Process Engineer is responsible for overseeing and optimizing the surface mount technology process in electronics manufacturing, ensuring efficiency, quality, and reliability in the production of electronic devices.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Process Development and Optimization: Design, develop, and implement efficient SMT processes for new product introductions (NPI) and existing production lines. Continuously monitor and analyze production processes to identify and implement improvements in efficiency, quality, and cost-effectiveness. 2
  2. Quality Control and Assurance: Collaborate with the quality team to establish process controls and standards, ensuring product quality and compliance with industry standards (IPC). Analyze yield of SMT processes to ensure process capabilities and throughput. 2
  3. Troubleshooting and Problem-Solving: Provide expert technical support to resolve process-related issues on the production floor, including equipment malfunctions, material defects, and process deviations. 2
  4. Documentation and Reporting: Develop and maintain comprehensive process documentation, including work instructions, process flows, and control plans. Ensure that all documentation is up-to-date and accessible. 2
  5. Team Coordination and Training: Provide training and technical guidance to production staff on SMT processes, equipment operation, and best practices. Lead and participate in continuous improvement initiatives, such as Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma.

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Educational Background: A bachelors degree in electrical engineering, manufacturing engineering, or a related field is typically required. Some positions may require a master's degree or relevant certifications. 1
  • Experience: Most employers prefer candidates with 2-5 years of experience in SMT manufacturing or a related field. Entry-level positions can provide valuable experience. 1
  • Technical Skills: Strong understanding of SMT processes, including solder paste application, component placement, reflow soldering, and inspection. Proficiency in CAD/CAM software and experience with process simulation tools are often required. 2
  • Analytical Skills: Ability to analyze process data, identify trends, and implement effective solutions. Strong problem-solving skills are essential. 2
  • Communication Skills: Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with all levels of management.
