Purpose of the role

The Senior Researcher supports the Legal Research and Drafting Stream by preparing structured written work, legal research, factual analysis and quality-assured drafting inputs for use by supervising Counsel and external client teams. The role focuses on written accuracy, structured reasoning, and reliable delivery of research outputs. This is a support role that works under supervision and does not engage in client advisory work.

Responsibilities and duties

• Prepare structured written materials including summaries, chronologies, factual matrices and draft submissions based on instructions and precedents.
• Review file materials, identify relevant facts and classify information for use in drafting.
• Conduct legislation, policy and case law research and summarise findings in clear, plain-English formats.
• Use approved templates, style guides and workflows to produce consistent outputs.
• Assist in updating internal templates, drafting aids and structured documents.
• Support senior reviewers by correcting, refining and quality-checking research outputs.
• Run structured analysis using internal tools and record findings accurately.
• Maintain internal spreadsheets including matter indexes, reference logs and research notes.
• Document sources, version control and research methodology for every assignment.
• Track revision cycles and apply feedback consistently across documents.
• Perform any other research or drafting tasks assigned by the Manager, Legal Research and Drafting Stream.

• Accurate, structured written work produced within agreed timelines.
• Clear research summaries aligned with internal formatting and reasoning standards.
• Well-maintained research logs, citations and version control.
• Draft materials prepared to a standard ready for senior review.
• Consistent application of templates, definitions and internal style rules.

Compliance and confidentiality

• All work must be completed using approved systems.
• Research materials, internal documents and client-related information must be handled confidentially and accessed only for authorised business purposes.
• Any document intended for external release is issued only after internal review and sign-off under applicable protocols.

Qualifications and experience

• Bachelor's degree in Law, Political Science, Public Policy, or a related discipline.
• One to three years of experience in legal research, analytical writing or structured drafting roles.
• Experience preparing written summaries, research memos or factual analysis in a professional environment.
