At the Ashiyana Centre, ELF works with rag picker girls by offering a safe learning space that nurtures their academic, emotional, social, and cognitive growth.
Position Overview
The Educationist cum Counsellor will be responsible for strengthening the academic and personal development of rag picker girls through play-way teaching methods, activity-based learning, and child-centred counselling. The role includes a significant focus on monitoring children's growth by conducting social, emotional, cognitive, and academic assessments and developing structured baseline, midline and endline tools.
Key Responsibilities
1. Academic Support Using Play-Way & Activity-Based Methods
- Conduct interactive sessions using games, storytelling, creative arts, music, and hands-on activities.
- Strengthen foundational literacy, numeracy, general awareness, and life skills.
- Prepare child-friendly learning materials to make learning joyful and meaningful.
- Track academic performance and learning progress regularly.
2. Social, Emotional & Cognitive Development
- Provide one-on-one and group counselling to address emotional, behavioural, or social challenges.
- Conduct sessions on self-expression, communication, values, confidence, coping skills, and emotional regulation.
- Encourage curiosity, problem-solving, attention-building, creativity, and cognitive growth through structured activities.
- Build a safe, trusting, and nurturing space where children feel secure and valued.
3. Assessments & Tool Development
- Develop assessment tools for baseline, midline, and endline evaluations covering:
- Academic skills (literacy, numeracy, comprehension)
- Social development (peer interactions, behaviour, communication)
- Emotional development (self-esteem, expression, regulation)
- Cognitive development (memory, reasoning, focus, problem-solving)
- Conduct assessments periodically and document findings.
- Analyse assessment outcomes to plan individual learning/counselling interventions.
- Maintain detailed child progress files and share findings with the program team.
4. Parent & Community Engagement
- Engage with parents/guardians to discuss child progress, attendance, and wellbeing.
- Sensitise parents on education, emotional health, hygiene, and child safety.
5. Child Protection & Care
- Ensure the learning environment follows ELF's child protection protocols.
- Report any concerns regarding safety, abuse, or behavioural distress immediately.
- Provide emotional first aid when a child is in distress or facing crisis.
6. Documentation & Reporting
- Maintain daily and monthly progress reports, assessment sheets, and behavioural observations.
- Coordinate with the Centre Coordinator and Program Manager for planning and reporting.
Team Management:
· The candidate should lead and mentor team and able to track the progress of team as well as each child
Required Qualifications & Skills
Education & Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Education / Psychology / Counselling preferred.
- 1–3 years of experience in teaching, counselling, or working with vulnerable children.
Key Skills
- Strong understanding of play-way, activity-based, and joyful learning methodologies.
- Knowledge of child development frameworks—social, emotional, cognitive, and academic.
- Ability to design assessment tools for learning and behavioural development.
- Compassionate counselling and child-handling skills.
- Excellent communication, observation, and reporting skills.
- Creative, child-friendly, and patient approach.

Work Schedule & Compensation
- Part-time role (2 days in a week or 4 hrs every day in a week; schedule as per centre requirement).
- Compensation will be based on experience and aligned with NGO sector norms.
