Primary Role:
The Assay Master is responsible for overseeing the hallmarking process to ensure that gold articles meet the legal standards of fineness and are correctly marked. This ensures consumer protection and maintains the integrity of the hallmarking system.
Key Responsibilities:1. Supervision of Assaying Process
- Oversee the assay (testing) of gold samples using approved methods (e.g., fire assay, XRF).
- Ensure accurate and precise measurement of gold purity (e.g., 22K, 18K).
Validate assay results before hallmarking.
Hallmarking Approval
Authorize or reject articles for hallmarking based on assay results.
Ensure that only articles meeting the BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) specifications are hallmarked.
Quality Control & Compliance
Ensure strict compliance with BIS regulations, including documentation and procedures.
- Implement quality assurance procedures for testing, sampling, and hallmarking.
Maintain calibration and maintenance of testing equipment.
Staff Supervision & Training
Manage the assay team and train staff in standard procedures.
Ensure competency in sample preparation, assaying techniques, and handling of materials.
Record Keeping and Reporting
Maintain accurate records of:
- Items tested
- Results of assay
- Hallmarking details
Submit periodic reports to BIS and relevant authorities.
Liaison with BIS & Auditors
Act as the main point of contact during BIS inspections and audits.
Ensure that all operations are ready for BIS surveillance or third-party audits.
Safety & Ethical Compliance
Ensure safe handling of chemicals and furnaces used in assaying.
- Maintain integrity, impartiality, and transparency in all hallmarking operations.
Additional Skills & Knowledge Required:
- Deep knowledge of precious metal assaying techniques.
- Familiarity with BIS hallmarking rules (IS 1417).
- Experience with laboratory equipment like:
- XRF Spectrometers
- Cupellation furnaces
- Strong organizational, supervisory, and analytical skills.
