What does a successful Mainframe Engineering Lead/Director do?

As the Mainframe Engineering Lead/Director at Fiserv, you will oversee the design, implementation, and maintenance of our mainframe computing environment. Leading a team of skilled professionals, you will ensure the reliability, security, and performance of our mainframe systems while driving strategic initiatives to modernize and optimize mainframe infrastructure in alignment with business objectives. You will collaborate with senior management to align mainframe initiatives with overall business goals and stay updated on industry trends to continuously improve infrastructure capabilities.

What you will do:

  • Develop and execute strategies for mainframe infrastructure to support the organization's goals.
  • Lead and mentor a team of mainframe engineers and administrators, fostering a collaborative work culture.
  • Oversee the design and implementation of mainframe hardware and software configurations to meet performance and security requirements.
  • Establish and maintain monitoring and maintenance processes for mainframe systems.
  • Implement and enforce security measures to protect mainframe systems from unauthorized access and cyber threats.
  • Manage relationships with mainframe hardware and software vendors, including contract negotiations and vendor performance evaluations.

What you will need to have:

  • 10+ years of experience in mainframe infrastructure management, including hands-on experience with mainframe hardware, operating systems (e.g., z/OS), and subsystems like CICS, DB2, MQ.
  • 10+ years of experience in mainframe performance and capacity planning.
  • Strong leadership and team-building skills with a proven track record of leading high-performing technical teams.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field, and/or equivalent military experience.
  • Extensive experience in mainframe modernization initiatives, such as cloud migration, virtualization, and automation.

What would be great to have:

  • 12+ years of experience in disaster recovery planning and implementation for mainframe systems.
  • 12+ years of experience in managing and optimizing mainframe storage systems and networking protocols.
  • Industry certifications (e.g., IBM Certified System Administrator for z/OS).
  • 15+ years of experience collaborating with cross-functional teams on mainframe projects.
  • Advanced degree (Masters or higher) in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
