1. Position Summary
The Matron is responsible for ensuring the highest standards of patient care, nursing quality, discipline, and operational efficiency across all nursing units. The role involves supervision of nursing staff, monitoring adherence to clinical protocols, maintaining hygiene and safety standards, and acting as a bridge between Nursing Management and clinical teams.
2. Key Responsibilities
A. Patient Care & Service Quality
- Ensure delivery of safe, high-quality, patient-centric nursing care across all inpatient and critical care units.
- Conduct daily patient rounds to evaluate nursing care, patient comfort, and service satisfaction.
- Ensure timely response to patient and relative concerns; escalate unresolved issues to the Nursing Head.
B. Nursing Staff Supervision
- Supervise and guide Nursing In-charges, Staff Nurses, and support teams.
- Monitor staff punctuality, discipline, grooming standards, and adherence to duty rosters.
- Conduct on-the-job training, mentoring, and performance assessments of nursing staff.
- Identify training needs and coordinate internal training sessions.
C. Clinical Governance & Compliance
- Ensure all nursing practices strictly follow hospital policies, clinical protocols, and statutory guidelines.
- Verify completion of patient documentation, nursing notes, medication administration records, and consent forms.
- Monitor adherence to infection control practices, hand hygiene, biomedical waste management, and sterilization norms.
- Ensure compliance during audits—NABH, JCI, internal audits, and quality inspections.
D. Operational Management
- Oversee daily functioning and readiness of wards, ICUs, and specialty units.
- Ensure availability of equipment, crash carts, consumables, and emergency supplies.
- Coordinate bed management for smooth admissions, transfers, and discharges.
- Ensure timely communication with doctors, technicians, housekeeping, biomedical, and allied departments.
E. Staff Scheduling & Administrative Duties
- Approve duty rosters prepared by nursing in-charges and ensure adequate manpower coverage.
- Manage leave planning, shortage adjustments, and emergency staffing arrangements.
- Prepare and submit daily/weekly/monthly nursing reports to the Nursing Head.
- Conduct staff meetings and maintain records of incidents, grievances, and disciplinary actions.
F. Patient Safety & Incident Management
- Respond to emergencies and ensure rapid mobilization of nursing staff.
- Investigate clinical incidents, medication errors, and patient complaints; prepare reports and corrective action plans.
- Ensure timely incident reporting and follow-up on corrective actions.
3. Skills & Competencies
- Strong leadership, decision-making, and people-management skills.
- Excellent communication and conflict-resolution abilities.
- Deep understanding of clinical procedures, nursing protocols, and hospital operations.
- Ability to manage stressful situations and maintain composure.
- Proficiency in documentation, planning, and coordination.
4. Qualifications & Experience
- B.Sc. (Nursing) / M.Sc. (Nursing) from a recognized institution.
- Registered with the State Nursing Council.
- Minimum 8–12 years of clinical experience with at least 3–5 years in a supervisory role (Sister In-Charge / Nursing Supervisor).
- Experience in NABH-accredited or multispecialty hospital preferred.
5. Working Conditions
- Rotational duties if required (generally daytime leadership shifts).
- On-call responsibilities for emergency situations.
- Coordination with multi-disciplinary teams across the hospital.
