A Day in the Life
The Principal Software Engineer, Embedded Software will be a member of the Medtronic R&D software team working on product development and support of capital platform products. Principal Software Engineer is considered an expert in embedded software development including the understanding of how software interacts with hardware and FPGAs. The position is a hands-on development role with a dynamic set of responsibilities in a complex software system including coding applications, user interfaces, drivers, and utilizing various middleware and frameworks. The Principal Software Engineer, Platform Software will be a member of the Medtronic R&D engineering, Hyderabad team working on the development and support of Medtronic next generation minimally invasive platform.

Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned:

• The Principal Software Engineer is responsible for providing Leadership in the software development of cutting-edge products used in the medical field. Specific tasks include:
• Principal the software architecture planning, design and implementation
• Designing, developing, testing and documenting software components and applications.
• Architect, Develop and execute Embedded software Test Automation Strategy/ Frameworks/Platforms for Medical Devices across Medical Surgical Group in Collaboration with Cross Functional teams like Electrical, Mechanical etc.
• Leading requirements gathering, estimating, and planning efforts.
• Promote continuous improvement through the use of tools and practices such as Agile, Scrum
• Interfacing with mechanical, electrical, systems, and test engineers.
• Troubleshooting, debugging, maintaining, and supporting existing software products.
• Supporting labs and surgical evaluations of products.
• Participating in and Leading on-going professional development activities.
• Following Medtronic Surgical Innovations product development standards and practices.
• Identifying and implementing process improvements.
• Willingness and ability to assume increased responsibility.
• Effectively Leading development teams.
• Occasional domestic and international travel may be required.
• All activities must be performed in compliance with the Quality System.
• Performs duties in compliance with environmental, health and safety related site rules, policies or governmental regulations.
• Reports to the Software Manager for functional leadership.
• Frequent interaction with Global stake holders, Software Developers, team members from other disciplines, particularly SWQA, SW V&V engineers, to develop software test requirements and other project artifacts. Possible interaction with third-party vendors, subcontractors and other users.

Required knowledge and experience:

• Bachelor's or master's degree in computer science/ ECE/EE or equivalent
• BE with 14+ years of experience in software design and development is required.
• Medical Device Industry or related experience
• Expertise in Embedded C in RTOS development environment.
• Working knowledge of Communication protocols ( I2C, SPI, UART).
• Hands on experience in Embedded / Firmware Device Driver
• Experience in hardware/software interfacing and design issues required.
• Debugging experience using Logic Analyzer
• Expert in Automation languages (e.g. Python..)
• Architect and Develop Embedded software Test Automation Strategy/ Frameworks/Platforms for Medical Devices across Medical Surgical Group in Collaboration with Cross Functional teams like Electrical, Mechanical etc.
• Develop & Deliver CI/CD plans for Embedded Automation Test Suites
• Strong interpersonal, presentation, and organizational skills
• Participate in System design, coordination with teams and internal product management
• Experience with change control, requirements management, source code control
• Excellent time management and professionalism
• Superior written and verbal communication skills required.
• Perform Code Reviews, Static Code Analysis, Dynamic Code Analysis
• Generate Software Metrics for Unit Testing, Integration Testing
• Works collaboratively with software engineers, and SW QA. Flexible in working under changing and different work settings and work in different time zones
• Experience working in regulated environments and delivering new products in compliance with global regulatory standards
• Prior experience Leading the development of FDA Class I, II and III Medical Device systems
• Prior experience with and working understanding of complex embedded systems and software
