A salesperson is a professional who sells products or services by identifying and engaging with potential customers to generate revenue
. Their work involves building and maintaining relationships with clients, understanding their needs, and positioning their company's offerings as the best solution. This process is managed and tracked using a Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system.
The sales process
The work of a salesperson can be broken down into several key steps:
- Identifying prospects (Prospecting): This is the initial stage of the sales cycle, where potential customers (prospects) are found and contacted. This can be done through cold calls, emails, networking, or by following up on "warm" leads provided by the marketing department.
- Conducting sales presentations: Once a prospect shows interest, the salesperson delivers a presentation to demonstrate the product or service. The goal is to highlight the benefits and features and explain how they meet the potential customer's needs.
- Negotiating contracts: This involves discussing and agreeing upon the terms, conditions, and pricing of the deal with the customer. It requires strong persuasive skills to find a mutually beneficial agreement.
- Achieving sales targets: Salespeople are typically given specific goals, or quotas, to meet within a given timeframe. Their performance against these targets often determines their income, which may include a base salary plus commission.
- Maintaining customer relationships: A successful salesperson ensures customer satisfaction after a deal is closed. This builds long-term loyalty, encourages repeat business, and can generate referrals for new customers.
