Device Integration Specialist (Cerner CareAware/Device Integration Analyst)

Job Summary:

The Device Integration Specialist is responsible for connecting and integrating medical devices to the Cerner Millennium platform. This role centers on Cerners CareAware suite for device connectivity, including solutions like Bedside Medical Device Integration (BMDI), Infusion pump integration, VitalsLink, Lab device interfaces, etc.. The specialist will configure device drivers, set up data flows from devices (such as patient monitors, ventilators, anesthesia machines, IV pumps, lab analyzers) into Cerner, and ensure the data is captured accurately in the patients electronic chart. In servicing GCC and Middle East hospitals, the Device Integration Specialist ensures that the connectivity solutions are tuned to the local clinical workflows and that staff are trained to use the integrated devices efficiently.

Responsibilities and Deliverables:

  • Implement and configure Cerner CareAware medical device connectivity solutions. This includes setting up and testing device interfaces for:

  • Physiological monitors and vital signs devices (e.g., bedside monitors, ECG machines) to automatically chart vitals (Cerner CareAware VitalsLink).

  • Infusion pumps and anesthesia machines (CareAware Infusion Suite, Anesthesia integration) to capture infusion data and anesthesia records in Cerner.
  • Laboratory analyzers integration (Lab Medical Device Integration) to feed results directly from lab equipment into Cerner without manual transcription.
  • Other devices like ventilators, point-of-care testing devices, smart beds, and medication dispensing cabinets, ensuring all are networked and interfaced correctly.

  • Work with medical device vendors and hospital biomedical engineering teams to install and validate device drivers and ensure network connectivity for each device. Configure association of devices to locations and patients (to link device data to the correct patient in Cerner).

  • Test device data flow: perform thorough testing where device readings are sent to Cerner and appear in the correct location (e.g., in IView or appropriate chart sections) with correct units and timing. Verify that alerting/threshold functionalities (if any, like critical vitals triggers) work properly after integration.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve device integration issues: for example, if a device stops sending data or data is mis-mapped, investigate the CareAware iBus, driver logs, and interface messages to identify root cause. Provide timely support to fix issues to minimize downtime of critical devices.
  • Deployment planning and coordination: Work collaboratively with project managers and clinical departments on rollout of device integration schedule device installation and cutover during appropriate maintenance windows, coordinate user training for nursing/clinical staff on new integrated workflows, and provide go-live support in initial phases of use.
  • Stay updated on Cerner CareAware driver library and supported device list; manage updates or new driver deployments as new device models are introduced (especially common in high-tech environments of GCC hospitals).
  • Ensure compliance with data security and patient safety standards while integrating devices (for example, ensuring alarm data is transmitted, and patient identifiers are protected). Maintain documentation of device configurations and integration settings for client reference and future support.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of experience in healthcare device integration or clinical engineering, with at least 3 years specifically working with Cerner CareAware/Cerner Millennium device connectivity.
  • Strong technical knowledge of networking and device interfacing in a hospital context: familiarity with device communication protocols (Serial, TCP/IP), HL7 for device data, and Cerners iBus platform.
  • Hands-on experience integrating a variety of medical devices: vital signs monitors, infusion pumps, ventilators, anesthesia systems, lab analyzers, etc., into an EHR. Experience with CareAware BMDI, Infusion Suite, VitalsLink is highly desired.
  • Ability to troubleshoot complex issues that may span device hardware, network, and software layers. This includes interpreting device logs, integration engine messages, and using Cerners support tools to pinpoint problems.
  • Knowledge of clinical workflows around device use – for example, understanding how nurses take vitals, how anesthesiologists document cases, or how lab techs operate analyzers, to ensure the integration aligns with workflow and is adopted by users.
  • Strong coordination and communication skills: able to work with diverse groups (clinical staff for workflow, IT network teams for connectivity, device vendors for driver issues, and Cerner support for escalations).
  • Certification or training in Cerner CareAware or related device integration platforms is a plus. Likewise, any biomedical engineering background or certification will strengthen understanding of the devices themselves.
  • Experience in Middle Eastern healthcare environments, which often feature state-of-the-art medical devices, is preferred. Familiarity with regional preferences (e.g., common device brands in the region) and regulatory requirements for medical device data integration would be beneficial.
  • Fluency in English (written and spoken) is required
  • Ability to work during Gulf Standard Time to synchronize with client teams. Proven track record supporting or implementing Cerner at Middle East.
  • Willingness to travel on-site when needed for critical project phases (e.g., go-live, intensive integration testing), while primarily delivering services remotely. Travel expenses will be covered by the company.
  • Comfortable in an offshore delivery environment: self-motivated and disciplined to deliver code remotely, with the flexibility to travel to client site in the Middle East on occasion if critical for requirements gathering or deployment support.

***Base location is flexible and aligned with Gulf Standard Time.***
