MASTERCAM Programmer – Kannan Tools & Dies
Position Overview
The MASTERCAM Programmer is responsible for developing CNC programs for precision components machined on VMC, HMC, Turning Centres, and Multi-Axis CNC machines.
This role converts engineering drawings and 3D models into optimized toolpaths using CAM software, ensuring accuracy, efficiency, and manufacturability.
The MASTERCAM Programmer works closely with Engineering, CNC Operators, Tooling, Production, and Quality teams to support high-precision machining for aerospace, space, medical, oil & gas, and complex engineering components.
Key Responsibilities
1. CNC Program Development
- Create CNC programs using CAM software (Mastercam, UG NX, Fusion, Power mill, etc.).
- Develop optimized toolpaths for milling, turning, drilling, tapping, pocketing, contouring, and multi-axis operations.
- Prepare post-processed NC codes for machine controllers (Fanuc, Siemens, Mitsubishi, etc.).
- Ensure programs meet required dimensional accuracy, surface finish, and quality specifications.
2. Drawing & Model Interpretation
- Interpret 2D drawings, GD&T, BOM, and 3D CAD models.
- Identify critical dimensions, tolerances, profiles, and required machining sequences.
- Validate manufacturability and highlight feasibility issues before programming.
3. Tooling & Fixture Coordination
- Select appropriate cutting tools, inserts, holders, and machining parameters.
- Coordinate with Tooling Engineers for fixture design, tool lists, and setup sheets.
- Develop toolpath strategies to maximize tool life and reduce cycle time.
4. Process Planning & Optimization
- Create process sheets, operation flows, and setup instructions.
- Optimize toolpaths for efficient machining, reduced air cutting, and minimized tool changes.
- Improve machining time, tool usage, and machine utilization.
- Suggest alternate machining processes where necessary.
5. Program Testing & Validation
- Verify programs through simulation to eliminate collisions and errors.
- Support operators during first-off trials and prove-out.
- Make corrections based on operator feedback, inspection results, or tool behavior.
- Troubleshoot machining issues related to program logic or process strategy.
6. Quality Support
- Ensure programs comply with AS9100, ISO 9001, ISO 13485, and customer quality expectations.
- Support Quality Inspectors with machining data, tolerances, and geometric references.
- Implement corrective actions for machining-related NCRs.
7. Documentation & ERP Updates
- Prepare operation sheets, tool lists, setup documentation, and work instructions.
- Maintain programming records, revisions, and version control.
- Update ERP/MRP with programming-related information where required.
8. Coordination With Cross-Functional Teams
- Work closely with Production, Tool Room, QC, PPC, and Engineering to ensure seamless execution.
- Support NPD, prototype machining, and complex first-time jobs.
- Communicate machining challenges or improvements to stakeholders.
Required Qualifications
Education
- Diploma / B.E. / B. Tech in Mechanical, Production, Manufacturing, or related field.
- Certification or training in CAM software is an added advantage.
Experience
- 2–8 years of experience in CAM programming for precision machining.
- Experience in aerospace, medical, oil & gas, energy, or high-precision component machining preferred.
- Hands-on CNC machining experience is highly desirable.
Skills
- Proficiency in CAM software (Mastercam, NX, Power mill, Solid CAM, etc.).
- Strong understanding of GD&T, machining fundamentals, metal-cutting principles, and CNC processes.
- Ability to create efficient toolpaths for complex profiles and 3D surfaces.
- Knowledge of tooling, fixtures, feeds & speeds, and machining strategies.
- Strong analytical, documentation, and problem-solving abilities.
