Role Overview:

The Observatory Educator will be responsible for engaging visitors, students, and astronomy enthusiasts at the observatory by conducting interactive educational sessions, stargazing programs, and hands-on activities. The role combines science communication, public engagement, and operational knowledge of astronomical instruments to create memorable learning experiences.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct stargazing sessions, sky tours, and live demonstrations using telescopes, binoculars, and other equipment.
  • Deliver engaging talks, workshops, and presentations on astronomy and space science for diverse age groups.
  • Assist in planning and executing public outreach programs, school visits, and special astronomical events (e.g., eclipses, meteor showers).
  • Manage and maintain observatory equipment, ensuring telescopes and related instruments are properly handled and set up.
  • Simplify complex astronomical concepts into interactive, easy-to-understand formats.
  • Guide visitors on constellations, planets, and celestial events during observational sessions.
  • Support research-based activities, educational projects, and content development for learning modules.
  • Ensure safety, discipline, and smooth flow of visitor experiences at the observatory.
  • Collaborate with the education and event teams to design new programs and activities.

Qualifications & Skills:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Physics, Astronomy, Space Science, or related field.
  • Strong passion for astronomy and science communication.
  • Experience in public speaking, teaching, or conducting workshops.
  • Hands-on knowledge of telescopes, binoculars, and sky-mapping software.
  • Ability to explain complex topics in an engaging and simplified way.
  • Strong interpersonal and crowd management skills.
  • Flexibility to work evenings, nights, weekends, and travel for outreach events.

Preferred Attributes:

  • Prior experience as an astronomy educator, science communicator, or stargazing expert.
  • Familiarity with digital planetarium software and astronomy mobile apps.
  • Creative approach to designing educational content and interactive sessions.
