We are looking for Senior Java Engineers with strong backend development expertise to join our Payments Engineering team at Uber. The role involves contributing to Engineering Excellence initiatives, focusing on building scalable, cross-cutting solutions that drive long-term value across multiple Payments teams.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and optimize backend services and platforms using Java.
  • Drive technical improvements and best practices across Payments engineering.
  • Contribute to system design discussions, ensuring scalability and reliability.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify opportunities for engineering excellence.
  • Ramp up quickly in new and complex domain areas and deliver high-quality outcomes.

Requirements

  • 7+ years of experience in backend development with strong expertise in Java.
  • Solid foundation in data structures, algorithms, and system design.
  • Experience building large-scale distributed systems.
  • Ability to learn quickly and adapt to new domains and technologies.
  • Strong collaboration and problem-solving skills.

Preferred candidate profile

  • Core Java (Java 8/11 or higher) advanced concepts, concurrency, collections, memory management
  • Spring / Spring Boot building scalable microservices
  • RESTful APIs & gRPC design and implementation
  • Databases – strong in SQL (MySQL/Postgres) + familiarity with NoSQL (Cassandra, MongoDB, Redis)
  • Messaging/Streaming – Kafka, RabbitMQ, or equivalent
  • Cloud Platforms – AWS / GCP (compute, storage, networking basics)
  • CI/CD – Jenkins, GitHub Actions, or equivalent pipelines
  • Testing frameworks – JUnit, Mockito
  • System Design – distributed systems, scalability, high availability
