Key Responsibilities

  1. Sterilization & Processing

  2. Receive, clean, decontaminate, disinfect, pack, sterilize, and distribute surgical instruments, linens, and medical devices.

  3. Operate sterilization equipment (autoclaves, plasma sterilizers, ETO, etc.) as per hospital protocol and manufacturer guidelines.
  4. Perform routine biological and chemical indicator tests to verify sterilization efficacy.

  5. Inventory & Supply Management

  6. Maintain adequate stock of sterile supplies, consumables, and instruments.

  7. Ensure timely distribution of sterile materials to Operation Theatres, ICUs, wards, and OPDs.
  8. Track usage and coordinate with purchase/procurement for replenishment.

  9. Documentation & Record Keeping

  10. Maintain sterilization logs, equipment maintenance records, and biological indicator test reports.

  11. Ensure traceability of instruments and sterile packs (batch numbers, dates, and expiry).
  12. Adhere to accreditation requirements (NABH/JCI) and infection control protocols.

  13. Quality Assurance & Compliance

  14. Ensure compliance with infection prevention and control (IPC) standards.

  15. Participate in internal and external audits.
  16. Monitor adherence to SOPs and recommend improvements in sterilization techniques and workflow.

  17. Equipment Handling & Maintenance

  18. Ensure proper functioning and preventive maintenance of sterilization equipment.

  19. Coordinate with biomedical engineering for calibration and breakdown maintenance.

  20. Training & Supervision

  21. Train CSSD staff in decontamination, sterilization, and aseptic handling techniques.

  22. Educate clinical staff on correct handling and return of used instruments.
  23. Promote a culture of safety and infection control awareness.

Skills & Competencies Required

  • Knowledge of sterilization techniques (steam, plasma, ETO, chemical).
  • Familiarity with infection control and aseptic practices.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy in documentation.
  • Ability to handle pressure during emergencies (urgent surgical cases).
  • Teamwork and coordination with Operation Theatres, ICUs, and wards.
