Consultant Biostatistician, International

1. POSITIONS VACANT: Consultant Biostatistician, International Not-for-Profit Organization (INPO), Remote.
2. ORGANISATIONAL BACKGROUND:
Our client is a respected international not-for-profit, that works in public health, to improve the health of disadvantaged communities, across the globe.
3. JOB DESCRIPTION/ RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Consultant Biostatistician (C-BIO) will be responsible to support the data management, ensure comparability across districts, document methodologies, and provide technical expertise for accurate interpretation and reporting of results.
Key Job Responsibilities:
(1) Data Management and Preparation:
(a) Work closely with the project team to clean, preprocess, and manage large datasets
for indicators related to health sensitivity, exposure, and adaptive capacity for
climate change;
(b) Ensure all datasets are prepared for normalization and PCA, including handling
missing data, transforming variables, and ensuring comparability across districts;
(2) Normalization of Indicators:
(a) Apply statistical methods to normalize the individual indicators for each district,
ensuring that all scores are on a comparable scale;
(b) Use appropriate techniques for transforming and standardizing the data to align
with the projects methodology;
(3) Principal Component Analysis (PCA):
(a) Conduct PCA to reduce the dimensionality of the dataset and identify key
components driving health vulnerability;
(b) Interpret the PCA results to combine the normalized scores into a composite
vulnerability score for each district;
(4) Calculation of Individual Scores:
(a) Calculate individual scores for each indicator under the categories of sensitivity,
exposure, and adaptive capacity;
(b) Ensure accurate and consistent calculations based on the data provided;
(5) Composite Vulnerability Score:
(a) Use the PCA results to compute composite vulnerability scores for each district,
highlighting the regions with the highest health vulnerability based on the combined
factors of sensitivity, exposure, and adaptive capacity;
(6) Documentation and Reporting:
(a) Document the entire statistical process, including methodologies, assumptions, and
steps taken to ensure reproducibility of the analysis;
(b) Provide detailed reports on the results of the PCA and vulnerability scoring,
including visualizations, tables, and other outputs that explain the findings to both
technical and non-technical stakeholders;
(7) Provide support for the Expert Group Consultation Meeting:
(a) This includes input on methodology for the meeting, to ensure that statistical
approaches and vulnerability scoring are clearly understood and integrated into
expert discussions;
(8) Collaboration and Support:
(a) Collaborate with the project team, including public health experts and GIS
specialists, to ensure the accurate interpretation and presentation of results;
(b) Provide technical support during the development of the Climate Health Atlas,
ensuring statistical rigor and accuracy in all calculations.
4. QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE AND COMPETENCIES:
Qualifications and Experience
(1) Applicants have an advanced degree (Master's or Ph.D) in Biostatistics, Statistics, or a related field;
(2) Minimum 3-5 years of experience in statistical analysis, including multivariate techniques such as PCA;
(3) Proven experience working with large datasets and data management tools;
(4) Strong skills in statistical programming languages (e.g., R, Python, STATA) and familiarity with PCA techniques;
(5) Familiarity with health-related data and indicators, particularly in the context of climate
change, public health, or environmental studies, is an asset;
(6) Experience with vulnerability index development and analysis is highly desirable
Skills and Competencies:
(1) Strong written and oral communication skills in English and Hindi;
(2) Ability to communicate statistical methods and results to non-statistical audiences;
(3) Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail;
(4) Technically proficient with up-to-date knowledge and skills required for the assigned task;
(5) Ability to handle a variety of assignments under pressure of deadlines;
(6) Microsoft Office computer skills, proficiency in Word, Excel and PowerPoint;
5. CONSULTANCY FEE: The overall consultancy fee budgeted for the assignment is INR 5,86,000 including travel reimbursement (for the period of six months)

8. NATURE OF CONTRACT:
The selected candidate shall be engaged as a Consultant on the rolls of SAMS, a third-party payrolling agency, for a full-time consultancy engagement initially offered for a period of Six months. The contract is extendable based on performance and project requirements. It is explicitly clarified that this consultancy engagement does not constitute a promise or guarantee of future employment, with SAMS, or our client, or any other organization associated with the project.
