Designation: Welding Inspector Level 2

Job Overview:Ensuring welding quality, compliance, and safety during fabrication, construction, and repair works in ship building & repairs

Qualification / Certification

  • Diploma or Degree in Mechanical/Metallurgical Engineering.
  • Certified CSWIP 3.1 / AWS-CWI / ISO 9712 Level 2 (VT, MT, PT, etc.).
  • 3–5 years of experience in fabrication, shipyard, or oil & gas projects is typically required.

Location: Tuticorin, India

Key Responsibilities:

1. Inspection and Quality Control

  • Perform visual inspection of welds before, during, and after welding to ensure compliance with applicable codes (e.g., ASME, AWS, ISO, IS standards).
  • Verify joint preparation, fit-up, alignment, and cleanliness before welding.
  • Inspect completed welds for defects such as cracks, porosity, undercut, lack of fusion, etc.

2. Review and Verification

  • Review Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS), Procedure Qualification Records (PQR), and Welder Qualification Test Records (WQT).
  • Ensure that only approved WPS and qualified welders are used for production welding.
  • Verify base materials, filler materials, and consumables against project specifications.

3. Testing Coordination

  • Coordinate Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) such as RT, UT, MT, PT, or VT as per project requirements.
  • Interpret NDT results and ensure proper documentation of findings.
  • Witness mechanical tests (e.g., bend, tensile, impact tests) during procedure and welder qualifications.

4. Monitoring of Welding Activities

  • Ensure proper welding parameters (current, voltage, travel speed, etc.) are maintained as per WPS.
  • Supervise repair and re-welding operations and verify corrective actions.

5. Documentation and Reporting

  • Maintain detailed inspection records, weld maps, and traceability logs.
  • Prepare inspection reports, daily welding progress, and weld rejection reports.
  • Verify completion of all quality control documentation before final handover.

6. Compliance and Safety

  • Ensure welding and inspection activities comply with project specifications, codes, and client requirements.
  • Ensure adherence to safety regulations during welding and inspection operations.
  • Report non-conformances and recommend corrective/preventive actions.

7. Liaison and Coordination

  • Coordinate with production, QA/QC, client representatives, and third-party inspectors.
  • Participate in site audits and client inspections.
  • Provide technical support to welders and supervisors on quality-related issues.
