Role & responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

1. Pre-Operative Duties

  • Prepare the operating room with necessary instruments, equipment, and sterile supplies.
  • Verify patient identity, consent forms, and surgical site before procedure.
  • Assist anesthetists during induction of anesthesia.
  • Ensure adherence to infection control and sterilization protocols.

2. Intra-Operative Duties

  • Assist surgeons by passing instruments and maintaining the sterile field.
  • Handle surgical instruments, sutures, sponges, and other materials responsibly.
  • Monitor patients condition and vital signs during surgery in coordination with the anesthetist.
  • Maintain accurate counts of instruments and sponges before, during, and after surgery.
  • Ensure adherence to safety protocols and aseptic techniques at all times.

3. Post-Operative Duties

  • Transfer patient safely to recovery room and hand over to recovery nurse with all details.
  • Clean and restock operating theatre after each procedure.
  • Send used instruments for sterilization and ensure readiness for next case.
  • Document all procedures, consumables used, and reports as per hospital standards.

4. Administrative & Supportive Tasks

  • Assist in maintaining OT schedules and coordinating with surgeons and anesthetists.
  • Ensure availability of emergency drugs, blood units, and surgical equipment.
  • Participate in audits, quality checks, and hospital accreditation activities (e.g., NABH).
  • Mentor junior nurses and trainees when assigned.
