Key Responsibilities

1. Installation & Commissioning

  • Install PBX hardware and software modules (traditional TDM PBX, hybrid or IP-PBX) at customer / site locations.
  • Configure new extensions, line/trunk circuits (PRI, SIP trunks, analog/digital lines), voicemails, auto-attendants, call routing, IVR and other telephony features.
  • Ensure proper integration with other systems (e.g., voicemail, contact centre, CRM/ERP integrations, paging/intercom if applicable).
  • Perform site surveys (for wiring, power, cooling, environmental, network readiness) prior to installation.

2. Configuration & Maintenance

  • Configure dial plans, routing rules, extension changes, add/move/change of users.
  • Maintain firmware/software versions of PBX and related components (gateways, SBCs, IP phones, voice mail systems).
  • Perform preventive or scheduled maintenance (backups of configuration, testing of redundant circuits, verifying system health).

3. Troubleshooting & Support

  • Respond to support requests/incidents related to voice systems: e.g., no dial tone, call drop issues, one-way audio, handset/extension faults, voicemail issues.
  • Diagnose and resolve PBX hardware faults, software bugs, network issues affecting voice (LAN/WAN, QoS, VLANs, SIP trunk failures).
  • Troubleshoot voice protocols (SIP, RTP, H.323, MGCP), trunk interfaces (T1/E1, analog FXO/FXS) and legacy telephony if present.
  • Escalate to vendors or higher-level engineering when required.
  • Provide on-site and remote support (depending on role) including field visits to client locations.

4. Upgrades, Enhancements & Projects

  • Participate in upgrades/migrations of PBX systems (e.g., moving from legacy PBX to IP-PBX or cloud voice).
  • Plan and implement new voice features (e.g., unified communications, mobility, integration with soft-phones, call centre features).
  • Work on voice infrastructure projects (adding new sites, expanding capacity, adding SIP trunks).
  • Collaborate with network/IT teams to ensure voice traffic is properly supported (QoS, bandwidth, VLANs, firewall rules, SBCs).

Typical Required Skills & Qualifications

  • Diploma or Degree in Electronics, Telecommunications, Computer Science or related field.
  • Proven experience in PBX systems (brands such as Avaya, Cisco, Mitel, NEC, Panasonic, Matrix) and telephony infrastructure.
  • Good understanding of VoIP technologies, SIP trunks, analog/digital telephony, IP networking (LAN/WAN, routers, switches, VLANs, QoS).
  • Troubleshooting skills: voice/dial-plan issues, handsets, trunks, network issues, firmware upgrades.
  • Ability to read/write technical documentation, change logs, configuration files.
  • Customer-facing skills: ability to train end users, coordinate with vendors, escalate properly.
  • Willingness to travel (if role involves field service/onsite support) and potentially work off-hours for maintenance or emergencies.
