Role Description
The Atlassian Migration Specialist
is responsible for planning, executing, and validating migrations across the Atlassian ecosystem (primarily Jira and Confluence). This includes migrations from Server/Data Center to Cloud, Cloud-to-Cloud consolidations, app/data migrations, and platform standardization. The specialist ensures data integrity, minimal downtime, strong stakeholder communication, and alignment with Atlassian best practices.

Key Responsibilities
1. Migration Planning & Assessment

  • Conduct detailed assessments of existing Atlassian environments (Jira, Confluence, Bitbucket, etc.).
  • Analyze plugins/apps, workflows, custom fields, integrations, and data volumes to determine migration scope and complexity.
  • Create comprehensive migration plans, timelines, and risk assessments.
  • Map requirements to Atlassian Cloud/Data Center capabilities and limitations. 2. Migration Execution
  • Perform end-to-end migrations: o Jira Server/Data Center → Cloud o Confluence Server/Data Center → Cloud o Cloud-to-Cloud tenant consolidations o App and marketplace data migrations
  • Utilize tools such as Cloud Migration Assistant, Configuration Manager, Project Configurator, JCMA/CCMA, APIs, and custom scripts.
  • Execute test migrations, validate data, and troubleshoot discrepancies.
  • Carry out production cutovers with minimal disruption and rollback plans. 3. Configuration & Administration
  • Configure Jira projects, workflows, screens, custom fields, automation rules, and permissions.
  • Configure Confluence spaces, templates, macros, and access controls.
  • Optimize configurations to align with Atlassian Cloud governance and performance guidelines.
  • Implement standardization and cleanup of legacy configurations. 4. Integration & App Management
  • Migrate or replace Marketplace apps while ensuring feature parity.
  • Manage integrations with identity providers (Azure AD, Okta, SAML), CI/CD tools, ITSM platforms, and reporting tools.
  • Validate API-based integrations and automation scripts post-migration. 5. Data Validation, Testing & Documentation
  • Develop test plans for pre- and post-migration validation.
  • Ensure data accuracy (issues, pages, attachments, comments, workflows).
  • Document all technical steps, architecture decisions, and migration reports.
  • Provide user guides and admin documentation as needed. 6. Stakeholder Communication & Training
  • Collaborate with product owners, engineering teams, PMO, security, and compliance stakeholders.
  • Communicate timelines, risks, dependencies, and migration impacts.
  • Conduct training sessions for end users and administrators on new Cloud features and changes. 7. Post-Migration Support
  • Monitor system performance and handle post-migration issues.
  • Optimize configurations for cost efficiency and performance in Atlassian Cloud.
  • Work with Atlassian Support on escalations.

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • 9 years hands-on experience with Atlassian Jira and Confluence administration.
  • 5+ years' experience in Atlassian Cloud or Data Center migrations (multiple end-to-end projects)
  • Strong understanding of Jira project configurations, schemes, workflows, and permission models.
  • Experience with Confluence space administration, content restructuring, and macros.
  • Familiarity with Atlassian Marketplace apps and migration complexities.
  • Expertise using migration tools (JCMA, CCMA, Configuration Manager, Project Configurator, ScriptRunner tools).
  • Knowledge of REST APIs, scripting (Python/PowerShell/Bash), and SQL (optional).
  • Understanding of identity integrations (SAML/SSO) and user management.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication, documentation, and cross-team collaboration skills. Preferred / Nice-to-Have
  • Atlassian certifications such as: o ACP-100 Jira Administrator o ACP-120 Jira Cloud Administrator o ACP-200 Confluence Administrator
  • Experience with Jira Service Management (JSM), Insight/Assets, OpsGenie, or Bitbucket.
  • Experience with Agile/DevOps tooling integrations.
  • Cloud governance and compliance experience (SOC2, ISO, data residency).
