A Pointsman is responsible for operating railway track switches (points) and signals to ensure the safe and efficient movement of trains within station limits, yards, and sidings.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Switch Operation:

  2. Manually operate railway points to set tracks for train arrival, departure, or shunting.

  3. Lock facing points in non-interlocked yards to prevent derailments.

  4. Train Signalling:

  5. Use hand flags or lights to signal train drivers.

  6. Ensure signals are correctly set and visible.

  7. Safety Checks:

  8. Confirm that tracks are clear of obstructions.

  9. Ensure stationary train brakes are away from fouling marks.

  10. Coupling/Uncoupling:

  11. Assist in coupling and uncoupling wagons and coaches during shunting operations.

  12. Communication:

  13. Coordinate with Controller and other railway staff.

  14. Relay track status and signal updates
