Mechanical Simulation Engineer

Role Purpose & Value

This role adds value by supporting the development process of boots for driveshafts with state-of-the-art CAE work of various disciplines: nonlinear strength analysis, fatigue, thermal and kinematic analysis. The responsibilities include product sizing as well as virtual product validation with correlation to physical testing. Main activities will be conducting simulation activities, summarizing the results and presenting them to the project team. Also, the continuous improvement of existing simulation methods is inherent in this position.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct Mechanical Simulation activities, primarily related to boots for driveshafts: starting from initial feasibility check, adjusting 3D CAD geometry, performing the analysis, writing the report and explaining the results to the project team.
  • Follow GKN simulation Way of Workings where existing and tackle all other problems with ad hoc approaches, methods and solutions. 
  • Independent organisation of own tasks, including estimating the time required as well as defining and committing to deadlines.
  • Develop new simulation methods within GKN and further improve existing methods. Support benchmarking of commercial products and maintenance of GKN CAE tools. Stay up to date in the global CAE technologies.
  • Daily collaboration with Mechanical Simulation Engineers, Product Design and other Engineering functions of different GKN sites globally. Support and contribute GKN's global expert network for simulation.
  • Support other engineering functions with simulation expertise. Promote simulation frontloading in the product development process.
  • Master Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field of study
  • preferably 3+ years experience in the field of Mechanical Simulation (strength, thermal, kinematics, fluid analysis or other)
  • experience in some CAE software tools and with 3D modelling in CAD
  • preferably some programming experience
  • Strong technical background and analytical skills, passion for numerical methods and tools
  • Reliable and result-oriented work
  • High quality standards for the own work, while still meeting the specified deadlines
  • High degree of initiative and team sprit
  • Good communication skills, capable to explain complex topics to the larger project team or to the customer
  • Fluent in English and preferably also in local language
