Job Description:

A General Manager (GM) of a Wire Rod Mill is responsible for the overall operational success of the mill, including production, maintenance, quality, and safety, by overseeing end-to-end processes from raw material to finished products. This role requires strong leadership, technical expertise in rolling operations, and the ability to drive cost efficiency, productivity, and continuous improvement initiatives. The GM also leads technical teams, manages production planning and scheduling, and ensures compliance with industry standards. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Operational Oversight:
    Manage all aspects of the wire rod mill's operations, including production, maintenance, and quality control. 


  • Production Planning:
    Plan and execute production schedules to meet business targets, ensuring optimal utilization of the mill. 


  • Process Optimization:
    Monitor process parameters and rolling schedules to improve productivity, yield, and reduce cobble rates. 


  • Cost Control:
    Analyze production costs, control fuel and power consumption, and implement measures for cost optimization. 


  • Quality Assurance:
    Ensure the production of high-quality products by implementing quality systems and conducting audits. 


  • Safety & Compliance:
    Ensure strict adherence to safety, environmental, and quality standards. 


  • Team Leadership:
    Lead, motivate, and develop technical teams, operators, and supervisors to foster a high-performance culture. 


  • Continuous Improvement:
    Drive initiatives for process improvement, technology adoption, and staff training. 


  • Coordination:
    Coordinate with other departments, such as the Block Mill and Steel Melting Shop (SMS), for seamless operations. 


  • Reporting:
    Prepare and present periodic reports on production performance, downtime, efficiency, and other key metrics. 



Qualifications & Skills
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Metallurgy, or Production Engineering. 
     
  • Experience: Extensive experience in the steel industry, with significant leadership experience in wire rod mill operations. 
     
  • Technical Skills: Strong technical and production engineering skills, with expertise in rolling mill operations, pass design, and furnace operations. 
     
  • Leadership Skills: Proven leadership, team-building, problem-solving, and coordination abilities. 
     
  • Analytical Skills: Proficient in production data analysis, report review, and implementing management information systems (MIS). 
     
  • Profit Center Management: Capability to manage the wire rod mill as an independent profit center. 
     
  • Knowledge of Standards: Familiarity with quality management systems (QMS), standards like ISO, and process efficiency methodologies such as 5S and Lean.
