This position demands deep subject matter expertise in financial reconciliation, combined with a strong understanding of industry best practices and technological solutions. The successful candidate will integrate technical acumen with comprehensive domain knowledge to drive operational excellence, efficiency, and risk mitigation within the reconciliation function.
This role requires an in-depth understanding of how reconciliation processes integrate within the broader financial operations sub-function and how they contribute to the overarching objectives of the entire organization. A foundational commercial awareness is essential to align operational strategies with business goals. Exceptional communication and diplomacy skills are paramount for guiding, influencing, and collaborating with colleagues across various departments and occasional external stakeholders.
The Senior Manager holds comprehensive responsibility for the volume, quality, timeliness, and delivery of end results for their area. This includes full management oversight of a team, encompassing performance evaluation, compensation decisions, hiring, disciplinary actions, and terminations. The role may also involve contributing to planning, budgeting, and policy formulation within the reconciliation domain.
Key Responsibilities:
- Strategic Team Leadership & Management:
- Directly manage and lead one or more teams, including subordinate managers, fostering a culture of high performance, accountability, and continuous improvement.
- Provide comprehensive leadership for all aspects of personnel management, including performance evaluations, compensation recommendations, hiring, training, development, and, when necessary, disciplinary actions and terminations.
- Maintain optimal staffing levels and hiring requirements to consistently meet and exceed operational demands.
- Technical & Operational Excellence:
- Address and resolve highly complex and variable reconciliation issues, demonstrating significant departmental impact through effective problem-solving and root cause analysis.
- Spearhead the identification, evaluation, and implementation of cutting-edge automation solutions (e.g., RPA, AI/ML for anomaly detection, workflow automation platforms) and process improvements to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and scalability within reconciliation operations.
- Drive the adoption of industry best practices in reconciliation methodologies, data matching algorithms, and exception management frameworks.
- Proactively identify and escalate potential risk issues, operational vulnerabilities, and revenue leakage points to senior management, providing data-driven insights and proposed remediation strategies.
- Domain & Commercial Acumen:
- Apply a deep, hands-on understanding of financial reconciliation principles, including general ledger reconciliation, bank reconciliation, intercompany reconciliation, trade reconciliation, and specific asset/liability class reconciliation.
- Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of how reconciliation processes collectively integrate within the financial sub-function and contribute to the overall objectives of the enterprise, underpinned by a strong commercial awareness.
- Provide expert evaluative judgment based on rigorous analysis of factual information in intricate and unique reconciliation scenarios.
- Governance & Risk Management:
- Ensure strict adherence to essential reconciliation procedures and actively contribute to defining and refining operational standards and controls.
- Proactively assess and mitigate risks in all business decisions, emphasizing the firm's reputation and safeguarding client assets.
- Drive compliance with applicable laws, rules, and regulations (e.g., SOX, BASEL, Dodd-Frank where applicable), adhering strictly to internal policies.
- Apply sound ethical judgment in all aspects of conduct and business practices.
- Effectively supervise team activities, foster accountability, and manage and report control issues with transparency.
- Strategic Planning & Budgeting:
- Share responsibility for budget management, policy formulation, and strategic planning within the reconciliation domain.
- Contribute to short-term resource planning, ensuring optimal allocation to achieve departmental and organizational goals.
Qualifications:
- A minimum of 10+ years of progressive experience in financial operations, with a significant portion specifically focused on complex reconciliation processes within a large-scale financial institution or multinational corporation.
- Demonstrated hands-on technical proficiency with reconciliation systems and tools (e.g., BlackLine, ReconNet, Duco), data analysis tools (e.g., SQL, Python/R for data manipulation), and advanced Excel capabilities.
- Proven experience in identifying, designing, and implementing automation solutions (e.g., Robotic Process Automation - RPA, scripting, macros) for reconciliation processes.
- In-depth understanding of various financial products and their associated reconciliation challenges (e.g., equities, fixed income, derivatives, payments).
- Senior-level experience in a related role, with substantial and proven people management experience leading high-performing operational teams, including managing managers.
- Exceptional developed communication, negotiation, and diplomacy skills, capable of persuading and influencing diverse internal and external stakeholders.
Education:
- Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, Computer Science, or a related field is required.
