Mechanics are responsible for diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining vehicles and machinery to ensure they operate safely and efficiently. Key duties include performing routine maintenance like oil changes and tyre rotations, using diagnostic tools to identify problems, and repairing or replacing faulty parts. They also maintain accurate records of all services and ensure they comply with safety standards.

Key duties and responsibilities

• Inspection and diagnostics: Perform routine inspections to identify potential issues.
• Use diagnostic equipment and computerised scanners to troubleshoot problems.
• Examine and test vehicle parts and systems to ensure they are functioning correctly.
• Maintenance and repair: Perform basic maintenance, such as changing oil, checking fluid levels, and rotating tyres.
• Repair or replace worn or faulty components like brake pads, sensors, and engine parts.
• Conduct tune-ups and electrical work.
• Perform welding and other fabrication as needed.
• Record-keeping and communication: Maintain detailed and accurate records of all services performed.
• Communicate with customers to explain problems, recommended repairs, and costs.
• Source and order replacement parts.
• Safety and Quality Assurance: Ensure all repairs are completed in accordance with manufacturer guidelines and safety standards.
• Follow all safety protocols and regulations.
• Conduct test drives after repairs to verify proper function.
• Other responsibilities: Stay updated on new vehicle technologies and repair techniques.
• Maintain tools and equipment.
• Guide junior technicians or apprentices.
