A Quality Engineering (QE) Manager is a senior leader responsible for building and overseeing an organization's Quality Engineering strategy, culture, and team. Unlike a traditional Quality Assurance (QA) Manager who focuses primarily on validation at the end of the software development lifecycle (SDLC), a QE Manager drives a "shift-left" approach by embedding quality throughout the entire process.

This role combines technical expertise in automated testing and modern engineering practices with strong leadership and project management skills to deliver high-quality, reliable, and scalable products.

Key responsibilities

Strategy and management

• Develop and implement QE strategy : Define the overall quality engineering strategy, frameworks, and best practices to ensure high product quality and reliability.
• Manage the QE team : Hire, mentor, and lead a team of QE engineers, fostering a culture of technical excellence, continuous learning, and ownership.
• Define and track metrics : Establish key performance indicators (KPIs) and quality metrics to monitor product quality, process efficiency, and team performance. Prepare reports and dashboards for leadership and stakeholders.
• Budget and resource management : Oversee the QE budget, including resources for personnel, tools, and testing infrastructure.

Technical and process leadership

• Champion test automation : Drive the adoption and maturity of automated testing across various platforms (web, mobile, API, etc.). Oversee the design and maintenance of scalable test automation frameworks.
• Integrate quality into DevOps/CI/CD : Ensure testing is an integral part of the continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) pipeline, allowing for rapid and reliable releases.
• Drive quality improvement initiatives : Lead efforts for continuous process improvement. Conduct root cause analysis on defects to prevent recurrence and optimize testing methodologies and tools.
• Guide testing coverage : Work with engineering, product, and business teams to confirm and prioritize testing strategies, ensuring adequate coverage for both functional and non-functional requirements.

Skills and qualifications

• Experience : Proven experience (often 5+ years) in a Quality Engineering or software development role, including several years in a leadership or management position.
• Technical expertise : Deep understanding of the software development lifecycle (SDLC) and Agile methodologies. Strong, hands-on experience with test automation frameworks and tools (e.g., Selenium, Robot Framework, Cypress, Postman).
• Programming skills : Proficiency in one or more scripting or programming languages (e.g., Python, Java, JavaScript).
• Cloud and DevOps experience : Experience with public cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP) and DevOps practices, including CI/CD integration.
• Leadership skills : Exceptional leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills to build and manage high-performing teams and influence stakeholders effectively.
• Analytical skills : Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities to make data-driven decisions and address complex issues.
