Job Description: Performing/Visual Arts (Music & Arts) Teachers (IB)

Openings - Multiple 

The primary purpose of Music & Arts Teachers will be – 

  1. To demonstrate sound curriculum knowledge; plan, teach and assess well designed lessons. 
  2. To ensure a safe and stimulating environment to foster students' creativity, rooted in a sense of mutual respect.
  3. Set the ultimate objectives & ensure that students achieve the set objectives and continuously improve. 
  4. Embody the behaviour and values that the students are expected to uphold.

Principal Accountabilities and Responsibilities:

  • Academic Responsibilities
  1. Teaching of Performing/Visual Arts - Music & Arts, including preparing courses and lessons; setting and marking of work.
  2. Planning lessons to meet student's individual learning needs and to ensure student's progression.
  3. Take responsibility for the designated area of the curriculum or curriculum innovation or project.
  4. Deliver planned curriculum in collaboration with subject teachers.
  5. Supervising a range of student activities including support and welfare programmes.
  6. Guiding and preparing students for in school and inter-school events.
  7. Actively initiate and participate in inviting artists and conducting workshops for students.
  8. Maintain and update existing curriculum plans, in alignment with the International Baccalaureate's Programme.
  9. Use a range of appropriate techniques & strategies for learning & teaching dance, drama, music, and visual arts.
  10. Ensure effective classroom management & maintain a well organised and stimulating learning environment fostering a holistic student .
  11. Work and collaborate with form tutors and Heads of Programme in planning the programme of inquiry and be committed to a concept-driven curriculum for supporting an inquiry.
  12. Provide opportunities to students to identify and reflect on "big ideas" within and between the arts strands and the programme of inquiry.
  13. Support students by giving opportunities to:
  • develop proficiency as dancers, actors, musicians, and visual artists;
  • acquire audience skills such as listening and viewing responsively;
  • interpret and present their own or others' works to a range of audiences;
  • evaluate the different roles of artists in society such as to entertain, provoke debate or challenge views and perceptions;
  • create and critique choreographed performance, plays, compositions and artwork using a selection of tools and techniques;
  • express feelings, ideas, experiences, and beliefs in a variety of ways;
  • improve coordination, flexibility, agility, strength, and fine motor skills.

Assessment, Recording and Reporting 

  1. Accurately maintain current records, including students' attainment, attendance, etc.
  2. Providing clear and constructive feedback for improvement and progress for each student  according to the Marking and Feedback policy.
  3. Assess, record and report on development, progress and attainment of every student.
  4. Using a range of assessment and reporting methods that show student's achievement in relation to learning outcomes.
  5. Assessing students' understanding regularly through all stages of the creative process, as well as the final product as per the Assessment policy.
  6. To communicate and consult with parents over all aspects of students' development.

Pastoral Care 

  1. Create lessons focussing on development of ATL skills among students, maintain a record and report the same in the progress report of the students.
  2. Focus on building the IB Learner profile attributes throughout the learning and teaching process; in line with the IB Standard and Practices and Learning and Teaching Policy.
  3. Be responsible for the social and emotional development of students.
  4. Take responsibility of students' safety & well-being. Be kind and sensitive towards the areas of development of children.
  5. To differentiate and target learning to students' needs and aptitude levels.
  6. Build & sustain an engaging relationship with students and parents.

Administrative Responsibilities

  1. Participating in appropriate administrative and organisational tasks in order to ensure the smooth running of the department.
  2. The activity area should be kept neat and tidy. Students should be encouraged to decorate their activity area and develops a pride in their activity room and in their school in general.
  3. Proper training should be given to see that students respect school property, and no damage to it should be acceptable.
  4. Ensure maintenance and up-keep of equipment & instruments.

Basic Qualifications and experience 

  1. Masters in the relevant art form from a reputed school or university.
  2. Preferably 3 to 5 years in a reputed school/organisation in the relevant subject area.
  3. Computer skills at a level that permits the creative and effective use of technology in the classroom.

Basic competencies and skills  

Communication

  1. Patience & ability to efficiently communicate relevant information with civility, clarity and purpose to staff, students, parents in a timely manner.
  2. Portray exceptional skills in coordinating tasks and activities at various levels.

Technical Know-How

  1. Experience with using computers and working with electronic databases.
  2. Ability to work on MS Office tools and Library Management System.

Self-management: 

  1. Take responsibility to research and work towards one's own professional development and using the outcomes to improve existing practices, consistent with school goals.
  2. Ability to encourage and maintain good order and discipline by building positive relationships with students.
  3. Adhere to the school's decorum and code of conduct.
  4. Be organised, proactive and self-driven. Ability to manage workload and meet deadlines.
  5. Show willingness to support the vision and ethos of the school.

Thinking: 

  1. Knowledge & ability to give positive and focused support to students with inclusive needs (in line with Inclusive Education policy).
  2. Secure knowledge and understanding of the strategies to inculcate the love for reading and research in students and teachers.
  3. Design relevant library programs for students and update the same regularly.
  4. Potential to set clear and appropriate goals for student learning and make use of assessment information to promote each student's attainment/progress, and plan future activities.
