Summary

The Specialty Medical Coder is responsible for reviewing and coding medical records for gastroenterology procedures and anesthesia services. This role ensures all services are documented and coded accurately using ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS codes to support the billing and reimbursement process while maintaining compliance with all relevant guidelines.

Qualifications:

  • A minimum of 23 years of experience in medical coding, with a specialization in anesthesia and/or gastroenterology coding.
  • Certified Professional Coder (CPC) certification is required.

Key responsibilities:

  • Accurately review and assign appropriate ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS codes for diagnoses, procedures, and treatments related to both gastroenterology and anesthesia.
  • Analyze physician documentation in medical records, ensuring it is complete and supports the codes assigned
  • Adhere to all federal and payer guidelines, including the Correct Coding Initiative (CCI) and other compliance regulations.
  • Code specialized GI procedures, including diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopies, colonoscopies, biopsies, and related surgeries.
  • Apply anesthesia-specific coding rules, including calculating anesthesia time units, using ASA codes, and correctly applying modifiers.
  • Stay current with frequent updates to coding guidelines, medical terminology, and specialty-specific procedures through continuous education
  • Collaborate with the medical billing team to process claims and resolve any issues related to coding or reimbursement

Technical skills:

  • In-depth knowledge of coding systems: ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS Level II.
  • Proficiency with electronic health records (EHR) and medical coding software is essential.
  • Strong understanding of anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology, especially related to the digestive system and anesthesia techniques.
