JOB SUMMARYThe Solid Waste & Hazardous Waste Scrap Yard Handler is responsible for safely managing the handling, sorting, and disposal of solid and hazardous waste materials in a scrap yard or recycling facility. This role includes overseeing the safe storage, segregation, and transportation of various waste types, ensuring compliance with environmental regulations, and maintaining a clean, organized, and safe scrap yard environment.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Waste Collection and Sorting:

• Collect, segregate, and sort solid and hazardous waste materials brought to the scrap yard.
• Classify materials based on type, such as metals, plastics, chemicals, and other recyclable or hazardous waste.
• Ensure proper disposal of materials, following local, state, and federal environmental regulations.
• Handle hazardous waste (e.g., chemicals, batteries, oils) in accordance with safety protocols and regulatory guidelines.

Safe Storage and Handling:

• Store hazardous waste materials in designated areas that are compliant with environmental laws and company policies.
• Ensure all hazardous waste is clearly labeled, properly contained, and segregated from non-hazardous waste to prevent cross-contamination.
• Regularly inspect storage areas for leaks, spills, or potential hazards and take corrective actions immediately.

Scrap Yard Organization and Maintenance:

• Maintain a clean, safe, and organized scrap yard to facilitate efficient waste processing and ensure worker safety.
• Regularly clean and clear waste areas to prevent accumulation of debris and reduce fire hazards.
• Assist in the removal of waste materials to designated storage bins, recycling areas, or disposal units.

Safety and Compliance:

• Follow OSHAS and environmental safety standards in all aspects of work, including wearing proper PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) such as gloves, goggles, and protective clothing.
• Report and document any incidents, spills, or accidents involving hazardous materials to the supervisor immediately.
• Conduct daily safety inspections of equipment and the yard to ensure compliance with safety regulations and company policies.
• Monitor and enforce safety protocols among workers in the scrap yard.

Equipment Operation and Maintenance:

• Operate material handling equipment, including forklifts, compactors, and balers, to move, load, or sort waste materials.
• Maintain and perform routine checks on scrap yard machinery and equipment, ensuring all equipment is functioning properly.
• Assist in minor maintenance and troubleshooting of equipment, reporting any major issues to the supervisor.

Documentation and Reporting:

• Keep accurate records of all incoming and outgoing waste materials, ensuring proper documentation for compliance with environmental regulations.
• Maintain a log of hazardous waste handled, including types of waste, quantities, and disposal methods.
• Assist with generating reports for internal use and external regulatory agencies.

Training and Team Collaboration:

• Participate in training sessions on waste handling procedures, safety protocols, and environmental regulations.
• Collaborate with team members and supervisors to ensure the smooth operation of the scrap yard and adherence to safety standards.
• Provide guidance to new staff or temporary workers in safe and efficient waste handling procedures.

Knowledge & Skills

• Ability to safely operate material handling equipment such as forklifts, Stackers Bailing machine/compactors, and other machinery.
• Strong knowledge of safety practices related to scrap yard operations and hazardous waste handling.
• Attention to detail and the ability to handle and segregate waste materials accurately.
• Good organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
• Strong communication skills for interacting with team members, supervisors, and regulatory authorities.

Certifications:

• OSHAS certification or similar safety certification is preferred.
• Hazardous waste handling certification is a plus.
• Forklift certification or willingness to obtain upon hiring.

Work Environment:

• The role is performed in a scrap yard or recycling facility, often in outdoor environments, subject to changing weather conditions.
• The position may involve exposure to loud noise, dust, chemicals, and other potentially hazardous materials.
• Work involves physical labor, including lifting, bending, and operating machinery.
• The position may require working in shifts, including nights and weekends, depending on operational needs.

Role Specific Qualifications/Certifications & Experience

• Experience:

a) Proven experience in Warehouse/Store /scrap yard Management role for about ~4-6 years..

b) Prior experience in waste management, recycling, or scrap yard operations is preferred.

c) Experience in handling hazardous waste or working in an industrial or environmental setting is an advantage.

d) Familiarity with waste disposal regulations, safety standards, and environmental guidelines.

• Qualification : Diploma in Mechanical engineering/Material Management/Scrap management
• Ideal starting age : 22 Yrs. -30 Yrs
