Role Overview
We are looking for a Staff Software Engineer to join our Growth Engineering team, which is responsible for driving new tool development, user retention, monetization, cross-sell, internationalization, payments, and growth experimentation across QuillBot's products. This role is ideal for an engineer who thrives in designing systems that directly impact millions of users and enjoys working in fast-paced, experiment-driven environments. You will collaborate closely with product managers, designers, and data engineers to deliver features and experiments that accelerate QuillBot's growth.

Responsibilities

• Architect for Growth: design and evolve scalable systems that power QuillBot's growth surfaces, from first-touch experiences and onboarding flows to monetization and lifecycle retention platforms.
• Cross-Functional Leadership: collaborate with Product, Design, AI, and Marketing teams to translate growth hypotheses into measurable, high-impact user experiences.
• Monetization & Payments Platform: architect global payment infrastructure and pricing systems that support subscriptions, credits, and marketplace integrations (Chargebee, Stripe, Razorpay, Adyen, EBANX, AWS Marketplace, etc.), enabling seamless and compliant global payments.
• AI-Driven User Journeys: partner with the AI Platform and Data teams to design contextual assistants, onboarding companions, and cross-sell systems that leverage AI Chat and user intent models.
• Retention & Lifecycle Systems: build event-driven systems for churn prediction, habit formation, and reactivation - integrating signals from product analytics, marketing, and customer success.
• International Expansion: engineer localization, regional pricing, affiliate tracking, and lifecycle marketing systems that help QuillBot scale efficiently across new geographies and user segments.
• Foundational Platform Ownership: lead technical ownership of shared surfaces such as Authentication, Legal & Compliance automation, Customer Success systems, and external partner integrations.
• Champion Technical & Product Excellence: set and uphold high standards for reliability, performance, and developer productivity. Mentor engineers, lead architectural reviews, and foster a culture of quality and curiosity.
• Shape the Growth Roadmap: partner with Product and Data Science to influence the strategic roadmap for growth, aligning technical innovation with QuillBot's mission and revenue objectives.

Qualifications

• 8+ Years of Hands-On Development: Strong experience building and scaling distributed systems and complex web applications.
• Growth-Oriented Mindset: Deep understanding of growth funnels, experimentation frameworks, and user journey optimization.
• 5+ Years with JavaScript-Based Stacks: Proficiency in React, , and TypeScript; familiarity with modern web performance and deployment patterns.
• 3+ Years of Architectural Leadership: Proven experience designing modular, event-driven, and service-oriented architectures.
• Data-Driven Thinking: Comfortable working with growth analytics, experiment data, and warehouse ecosystems (BigQuery, Amplitude, Snowflake, etc.).
• Payments & Monetization Expertise: Prior experience building or integrating global payment systems, subscriptions, or credit-based monetization flows.
• AI Product Familiarity: Understanding of how LLM-powered features are built and instrumented for engagement, conversion, and retention.
• Cloud & Infra Strength: Expertise with cloud providers (GCP / AWS), containerization, observability, caching, and database technologies.
• Cross-Functional Collaboration: Ability to work fluidly with Product, Design, Data, and Marketing to deliver measurable user and business outcomes.

We are a virtual-first company with employees across the United States, Canada, Germany, Netherlands, and India. We have a market-based pay structure that varies by location. The base pay for this position depends on multiple factors, including candidate experience and expertise, and may vary from the amounts listed below. You may also be eligible to participate in our bonus program and may be offered an equity award, benefits, and other types of compensation.
