What's the role
Join Shell's Cloud Native Engineering team as a Systems Engineer and help build the next-generation software engineering platform that powers Shell's digital future. You'll work with cutting-edge open-source technologies and collaborate with reliability engineers and development teams to enhance product performance, system reliability, and operational excellence across the organization.
In this role, you'll design and automate operational workflows, conduct architecture reviews, troubleshoot complex outages, and improve monitoring and observability. You'll also define service level objectives and agreements for critical systems while driving scalability and efficiency. Our tech stack includes Azure Native, Terraform, Vault, Jenkins, Docker, AKS, Prometheus, Grafana, Elastic, Moogsoft, Aqua Wave, Palo Alto products, and more – giving you the opportunity to work on large-scale systems with real impact.
What you'll be doing
Collaborate with Application Engineers across US, Europe, and India to deliver world-class services.
Partner with development teams to design, architect, and implement systems for improved reliability, performance, efficiency, and scalability.
Ensure key services are monitored, measured, and alerting appropriately.
Automate deployment and configuration processes; develop reliability tools and frameworks for engineering teams.
Share on-call duties for critical systems, lead incident response, and conduct no-blame post-mortems.
Drive operational efficiencies: capacity planning, configuration management, performance tuning, monitoring, and root cause analysis.
Provide infrastructure expertise and guide development teams in effective usage.
Lead capacity planning and growth preparedness.
Manage Windows/Linux environments: deployments, migrations, upgrades, patching, access management (Cloud & Active Directory), application support, agent remediation, business continuity, and disaster recovery.
Design Azure foundational components (VNET, Blob storage, instances, functions, networking).
Work on Azure Disk, Resource Monitoring, Automation, Runbook, Backup & Restoration.
Troubleshoot Azure Virtual Network Gateway and ExpressRoute.
Implement cost management, billing, resource utilization, and availability sets.
Create architecture diagrams and demonstrate Azure features.
Administer and provide operational support for Azure environments; develop technical standards for Microsoft Azure platforms.
Engineer, configure, maintain, and troubleshoot Windows Servers and related technologies.
Manage planned and emergency changes per defined change control processes.
Hands-on experience with cloud infrastructure and Linux/Windows OS administration.
Own incidents/requests/problems in ServiceNow, perform troubleshooting, and handle user escalations.
What you bring
2+ years of hands-on experience with Azure Cloud, ITIL processes, and Windows/Linux operating systems
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science or a related technical field
Strong knowledge of ITIL practices including incident, problem, configuration, and change management
Expertise in cloud networking and next-generation security services
Proven ability to provision, configure, and maintain Azure infrastructure with a deep understanding of services, platforms, and their limitations
Proficiency in Python, Go, PowerShell, and scripting languages for building automation tools, monitoring solutions, and efficiency frameworks
Extensive experience with Azure and other cloud services
Hands-on skills in customizing cloud components and working with tools such as Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions, Jenkins, Terraform, Grafana, Kibana, Docker, Kubernetes, and GitHub
Solid understanding of large-scale distributed systems including multi-tier architectures, application security, monitoring, and storage
Familiarity with DevOps principles and Agile methodologies such as SAFe and Scrum
Willingness to work on rotational shifts and be on-call during weekends, typically twice a month
