Job Description:
The General Manager (GM) for a Sponge Iron Division holds a senior leadership position responsible for the overall operation, profitability, and strategic planning of the division. This role involves leading cross-functional teams to ensure efficient and safe production while meeting quality and cost objectives.
Key Responsibilities
- Production Management: Overseeing daily production activities, planning annual/monthly production schedules, and ensuring optimal plant utilization to meet or exceed targets.
- Process Optimization: Controlling process parameters (e.g., temperature, raw material mix) and implementing continuous improvement measures to enhance efficiency, quality (Fe content, metallization), and overall performance.
- Cost & Resource Control: Managing operational and capital budgets, controlling raw material inventory and specific consumption, and implementing cost-effective measures to ensure profitability.
- Maintenance Oversight: Planning and implementing effective preventive and corrective maintenance schedules to maximize equipment reliability and minimize downtime, coordinating closely with mechanical and electrical teams.
- Quality and Compliance: Ensuring strict adherence to quality standards, as well as environmental, health, and safety (OHS) guidelines and statutory compliance.
- Manpower and Leadership: Supervising, motivating, and managing a large team of engineers, supervisors, and workers, including identifying training needs and fostering a positive work environment.
- Coordination and Reporting: Coordinating with other service departments (e.g., power plant, sales, administration) and preparing regular performance and MIS reports for directors and upper management.
- Project Management: Overseeing the commissioning, erection, and installation of new equipment or plant upgrades as needed.
Key Qualifications and Skills
- Education: A Bachelor's or Master's degree in Metallurgy, Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical field is typically required.
- Experience: Significant years of experience (typically years) in a sponge iron (DRI) plant operations, steel industry, or a similar heavy manufacturing environment, with proven managerial experience.
- Technical Knowledge: Deep understanding of the sponge iron manufacturing process, especially rotary kiln operations, equipment, and raw material analysis.
- Competencies: Strong leadership, problem-solving, decision-making, and communication skills, along with computer literacy.
