EDM Machinist

Job description:

Job Summary

The EDM Operator is responsible for operating and setting up CNC EDM machines to produce high-precision components used in the manufacturing and tool room operations. This includes interpreting engineering drawings, selecting the appropriate electrodes, ensuring all machinery and tools are accurately set up, and producing parts within very tight tolerances. The operator must be skilled in various EDM machining techniques and use a wide range of measuring instruments to maintain quality standards while working in a rotating shift environment.

Key Responsibilities:

• Reading and Understanding Drawings:
• Thoroughly review and interpret 2D CAD files, technical drawings, and blueprints to accurately understand the part dimensions, tolerances, material specifications, and required surface finishes.
• Ensure a clear understanding of each step in the machining process, including electrode selection, part setup, and required machine parameters.
• Picking Dimensions from 2D CAD Files:
• Extract key dimensions and features directly from 2D CAD files and other engineering documentation to ensure the correct setup of the EDM machine and tooling.
• Use these dimensions to select electrodes and machining parameters that are critical for achieving the desired accuracy.
• Understanding Operation-wise Process and Identifying Electrodes:
• Gain a comprehensive understanding of the entire EDM process, identifying which steps or operations are involved for each specific job.
• Determine the best-suited electrodes for each specific machining operation (e.g., sinking) based on part geometry, material type, and required tolerance.
• Electrode Deburring and Preparation:
• Carefully deburr and prepare electrodes without damaging the profile to ensure that they are free of defects that could affect machining accuracy.
• Ensure the electrodes are securely fitted into the EDM machine and are properly aligned for effective discharge machining.
• Job and Electrode Setup with High Accuracy:
• Set up the EDM machine and the work piece with a high level of precision, ensuring both the job and electrode are aligned to within 0.01mm accuracy.
• This includes making adjustments for factors such as machine tool alignment, electrode fitting, and material positioning to ensure optimal performance during the machining process.
• Setting the Sine Table for Angle Jobs:
• Set up and adjust the sine table to create precise angles for work pieces requiring non-parallel cuts or specific angular profiles.
• Ensure the sine table setup is accurate, and all components are securely mounted, as this affects the machining process and the final part geometry.
• Programming and Operating CNC EDM Machines:
• Independently program and operate CNC EDM machines and sinker EDM machines.
• Enter and adjust machining parameters, ensuring the EDM process runs smoothly, and quality standards are met for each part produced.
• Troubleshoot and adjust the machine settings if required during operation to correct any deviations or inconsistencies.
• Measuring and Ensuring Precision:
• Use various measuring instruments, such as micrometres, callipers, and precision gauges, to measure parts and verify their accuracy to within 0.01mm.
• Continuously monitor the machining process to ensure parts are produced within the required tolerances of +/-0.02mm, ensuring the highest level of quality and precision.
• Health & Safety Awareness:
• Ensure strict adherence to all company health and safety protocols while operating EDM machines.
• Maintain a safe work environment by following operational safety procedures and wearing the appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times.
• Ensure compliance with all relevant industry safety standards to prevent workplace accidents and injuries.
• Following Company Rules & Policies:
• Adhere to all company rules, regulations, and policies regarding machine operations, safety, and work conduct.
• Ensure all documentation, including job records, setup sheets, and quality checks, are completed accurately and in accordance with company guidelines.
• Report any machine malfunctions or discrepancies to supervisors promptly to maintain production flow.

Qualifications:

• Education: ITI or Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, Tool & Die Making, or a related field.
• Experience: Minimum of 3-5 years of hands-on experience with EDM machining in a tool room setting, particularly in the context of manufacturing precision tools and moulds.

Technical Skills:

• Proficient in reading and interpreting 2D CAD files and technical drawings for the accurate setup of EDM machines.
• Strong understanding of electrode selection and preparation processes, as well as experience with wire-cut and sinker EDM operations.
• Skilled in using a variety of precision measuring instruments, such as micrometres, callipers, and CMM, to ensure part accuracy within tight tolerances.

Soft Skills:

• Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality work.
• Good communication skills, both verbal and written, to ensure clear instructions and documentation.
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and manage workload efficiently.
• Good problem-solving skills, particularly in adjusting EDM machine settings for optimal part production.

Physical Requirements:

• Ability to lift and move heavy parts or equipment as necessary.
• Comfortable working in a standing position for extended periods and handling delicate tooling with precis
