Job Description:

A coal washery operator's job description involves operating, monitoring, and maintaining equipment to clean and process raw coal. Key responsibilities include adjusting machinery, ensuring quality standards, performing tests, and adhering to safety procedures. The role is critical for preparing coal for sale or further use by removing impurities through a process that often involves crushing, washing, and screening. 

Key responsibilities

  • Equipment operation: 
    Operate and monitor various machines like crushers, screens, separators, pumps, and conveyor systems.


  • Process monitoring: 
    Observe gauges and meters to ensure proper and efficient operation, and make adjustments to settings as needed.


  • Quality control: 
    Monitor the washing process to ensure it meets specific quality standards by checking the purity and other characteristics of the coal.


  • Maintenance: 
    Perform routine maintenance on equipment and perform basic troubleshooting to prevent or resolve operational issues.


  • Safety and cleanliness: 
    Adhere to safety protocols, monitor for potential hazards, and participate in cleaning the plant and equipment to prevent fires or explosions from coal dust.


  • Testing: 
    Collect and perform physical and chemical tests on the coal to verify its quality.


  • Record-keeping: 
    Maintain accurate daily records of coal received, processed, and handled. 



Required skills and qualifications

  • Experience: 
    Experience with operating and maintaining coal handling equipment is often required. 


  • Technical skills: 
    Proficiency in equipment operation, process monitoring, quality control, and basic troubleshooting. 


  • Safety awareness: 
    A strong commitment to safety procedures and a good understanding of the risks associated with handling coal. 


  • Physical fitness: 
    The job may require physical activity and the ability to work in a demanding industrial environment. 


  • Problem-solving: 
    Ability to identify and solve problems related to equipment operation or process efficiency. 


  • Teamwork and communication: 
    Ability to work effectively with a team and communicate with supervisors and other personnel. 


  • Educational background: 
    Qualifications can range from ITI and diploma to graduate levels, depending on the specific role and employer.
