About the Role

We're looking for a Product Design Engineer with a strong mechanical engineering background to help take an industrial consumer product from concept to near-final design. You'll own CAD, 2D drawings, and polished 3D/2D renders, delivering ~80% fidelity mechanical packages suitable for design reviews, early supplier engagement, and pre-DFM iteration.

What You'll Do

  • Translate product requirements into mechanical concepts, assemblies, and sub-assemblies.
  • Produce 80% fidelity CAD (parts + assemblies) with preliminary BOM and key interfaces defined.
  • Create 2D engineering drawings (dimensioned, GD&T where appropriate) to review-ready quality.
  • Deliver high-quality 3D and 2D renders for stakeholder communication and user testing stimuli.
  • Iterate based on feedback; run quick tolerance & fit checks and basic design trade-offs.
  • Recommend materials & processes (e.g., injection molding, die casting, sheet metal, machining).
  • Flag DFM/DFA risks early; propose cost, reliability, and assembly improvements.
  • Prepare complete handoff files and documentation for next phase (supplier quotes, prototypes).

Deliverables

  • Native CAD files (e.g., SolidWorks/Creo/Fusion neutral formats (STEP/IGES).
  • 2D drawings (PDF + native) at ~80% fidelity: critical dims, fits, tolerances, specs.
  • Rendering package: hero renders + orthographic views + annotated callouts (PNG/JPG).
  • Preliminary BOM (materials, finishes, key specs).
  • Short design rationale memo and open issues/risks list.

Must-Have Qualifications

  • BS/MS in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent) with 3–7+ years designing industrial/consumer products.
  • Expert in parametric CAD (SolidWorks, Creo, or Fusion 360) and assembly management.
  • Demonstrated 2D drafting proficiency (dimensioning, GD&T fundamentals, tolerancing for fit/function).
  • Strong rendering skills (KeyShot, SolidWorks Visualize, Blender, or equivalent).
  • Hands-on knowledge of manufacturing processes, materials, and fastening/assembly methods.
  • Experience taking products from concept to EVT/DVT or supplier quote stage.
  • Clear communication, remote collaboration, and disciplined version control.

Nice to Have

  • Basic FEA/simulation for sanity checks (stiffness, thermal, drop/impact).
  • Experience with IP ratings, safety/agency constraints, or ruggedized enclosures.
  • Knowledge of DFM with overseas suppliers and prototype shop handoff.
  • Past work on industrial consumer products (tools, appliances, equipment, wearables, etc.).

  • CAD: SolidWorks / Creo / Fusion 360 (specify your primary).
  • Rendering: KeyShot / Blender / SolidWorks Visualize.
  • File handoff: STEP, IGES, STL, PDFs; versioning via Git/LFS, GrabCAD, or cloud drive.

  • Compensation: Fixed-fee.
  • NDA & IP assignment required; all native and export files delivered at project close.
