EHS Engineer

Job description

Implement, maintain, and continually improve company-wide Environmental Management System (EMS) & Occupational Health & Safety Management System (OHSMS).

Drive implementation of EHS functional strategy and organizational objectives.

Manage internal audits for ISO 14001 & ISO 45001 requirements.

Ensure EHS statutory, legal, construction, and railway-specific compliance across projects.

Establish and monitor emergency preparedness & response plans.

Oversee incident management: recording, reporting, investigation, and corrective action.

Drive QEHS OKR implementation in line with organizational goals.

3 Key roles & responsibilities

• Develop, implement, and monitor Safety, Health, and Environment management programs in the plant and at railway and construction project sites.
• Conduct EHS risk assessments (including site-specific hazards such as trackside work, excavation, scaffolding, and working at height) and implement preventive/corrective measures.
• Conduct QEHS audits, inspections, and internal audits at both plant and project sites.
• Carry out incident/accident investigations with root cause analysis and corrective action planning.
• Define, implement, and monitor safe work permit systems (excavation, confined space, hot work, electrical, lifting, trackside activities).
• Ensure safety in construction-related activities, including:
• Civil works (excavation, concreting, foundation, trenching, barricading).
• Working at height, scaffolding erection/dismantling, and fall protection.
• Crane/lifting operations and rigging safety.
• Electrical installations and temporary site electrification.
• Contractor and subcontractor EHS management.
• Ensure site safety during railway installation activities, including cable laying, heavy equipment installation, signaling system setup, and compliance with railway authority safety protocols.
• Deliver EHS inductions, toolbox talks, and refresher trainings for site and contractor personnel.
• Develop and implement training modules on PPE, fall protection, scaffolding, lifting operations, confined space entry, working near OHE, and emergency response.
• Monitor and measure EHS KPIs across plant and sites.
• Conduct EMS & OHSMS review meetings with plant and site teams.

4 Authorities

Enforce compliance with safety requirements at plant, railway, and construction sites.

Stop or escalate any unsafe activity or non-compliance during installation or construction.

Lead EHS-related emergency preparedness drills (fire, fall, electrical, evacuation).

Coordinate and lead internal & external audits.

Drive continual improvement through Kaizen, Quality Circles, and safety campaigns.

5 Qualification & required technical skill sets.

Educational Qualification (any of the following):

ME/BE in Industrial Safety / Fire & Safety with minimum 1-year experience.

BSc (Physics/Chemistry/Maths) + 1-year full-time Safety Diploma OR 3-year Diploma + 1-year full-time Safety Diploma with minimum 5 years experience.

Any Graduate + 1-year full-time Safety Diploma with minimum 7 years' experience.

Strong knowledge of EHS statutory and legal requirements in India (Factories Act, BOCW Act, Electricity Act, etc.).

Hands-on experience in EHS management systems (ISO 14001, ISO

Ability to prepare and maintain ISO documentation, SOPs, Work Instructions.

Familiar with railway and construction project safety protocols (RDSO, IR standards, NBC codes, IS standards for scaffolding and lifting).

Strong analytical and reporting skills.

Ability to plan, prioritize, and conduct EHS training programs.

• Strong working knowledge of ISO 14001 & ISO 45001.
• Knowledge of construction and railway-specific hazards (scaffolding, excavation, OHE, trackside operations, signaling installation).
• Familiarity with industry best practices in construction and project site safety management.

8 Work location.

Based at FR IN, Mysore with readiness to relocate to railway and construction project sites across India as per business requirements.Role & responsibilities
