Job Purpose

To lead the technical review and oversight of Boiler Feed Pump (motor and turbine-driven), Condensate Extraction Pump, and Drive Turbine systems offered by the EPC contractor. Ensure compliance with project specifications, applicable standards, and long-term performance and reliability objectives.

Key Responsibilities

A. Engineering Review & Oversight

  • Lead review of Basic Engineering Design Documents (BEDDs), technical specifications, data sheets, and GA drawings for:

  • Motor-driven and turbine-driven Boiler Feed Pumps (BFP)

  • Drive Turbine (DT) for BFP
  • Condensate Extraction Pumps (CEP)

  • Evaluate mechanical and hydraulic design of pumps including:

  • Head, flow, efficiency, NPSH requirements

  • Pump casing design, bearing configuration, seal systems
  • Turbine drive ratings, performance curves, speed/load matching

  • Ensure integration of pumps and drive turbines with steam cycle heat balance, auxiliaries, and piping systems.

  • Review instrumentation and control philosophy for pump protection, startup interlocks, and emergency handling.
  • Check compatibility with process conditions (pressure, temperature, fluid properties) and site-specific conditions.

B. Vendor Document Review & Technical Evaluation

  • Review vendor documents including:

  • Fabrication drawings, QA/QC plans, rotor dynamics, performance test procedures

  • Thermal and mechanical loading, support configuration, baseplate design

  • Participate in Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT) or Performance Guarantee Tests (PGT) as needed.

  • Coordinate technical clarifications and design modifications with EPC and OEM vendors.

C. Interface & System Integration

  • Verify proper mechanical interfaces with:

  • TG Island piping (suction/discharge)

  • Control oil system and steam supply/return piping for drive turbine
  • Foundation, support base, and auxiliaries

  • Validate mechanical integration of pumps and drive turbine within BOP systems (e.g., steam cycle, cooling water).

  • Participate in 3D model review for layout verification and maintainability access.

D. Construction & Commissioning Support

  • Provide support for installation and alignment procedures of pumps and turbine drive sets.
  • Assist in resolving site issues related to vibration, thermal growth, alignment, or sealing problems.
  • Review and approve commissioning plans for BFP/CEP/Drive Turbine systems.

Required Qualifications

  • B.E./B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering
  • 1215+ years of experience in rotating equipment engineering, particularly in thermal power plant applications
  • Hands-on experience in BFP (motor- and turbine-driven) and CEP system engineering
  • Experience with Owner's Engineer or EPC project execution for large-scale thermal plants

Preferred Skills & Knowledge

  • In-depth understanding of:

  • Pump affinity laws, rotor dynamics, and shaft alignment

  • Seal systems, control oil and lube oil systems
  • Vibration monitoring systems and protection instrumentation

  • Familiarity with relevant codes/standards (API, ASME, HEI, NEMA, ISO)

  • Experience with major OEMs (e.g., KSB, Sulzer, BHEL, Flowserve, ClydeUnion)

Competencies

  • Strong leadership in multidisciplinary engineering reviews
  • Excellent documentation, report writing, and communication skills
  • Ability to lead design meetings, FATs, and interface resolution
  • Proactive approach to problem-solving and cross-team coordination
