Principal Cloud Engineer
POSITION PURPOSE:
A principal infrastructure engineer is an accomplished technical leader. Individuals in this role will:
- Develop strategic and tactical engineering roadmaps for technologies and services in a given area of responsibility, ensuring future-proofing and the attainment of maximum value from investment in technologies
- Potentially own the operational relationships with suppliers, ensuring services and products are delivered and aligned to industry best practice and regulatory and contractual requirements
- Work with software engineers and data engineers to translate technical designs into operations and support engineers in operationalizing designs
- Lead and direct the infrastructure specialist teams in building, managing, supporting, and maintaining solutions according to architectural guidelines
This is a pivotal role responsible for designing, implementing, and managing secure, scalable, and resilient cloud infrastructure for the Drug Innovation Platform. This role aims to integrate development, security, and operations (DevSecOps) practices to enhance the platform's ability to innovate rapidly while maintaining high standards of security, compliance, and operational efficiency. The Engineer III will collaborate with cross-functional teams to automate workflows, implement robust security measures, and optimize cloud resources to support data-driven drug discovery and development initiatives. This position plays a crucial role in enabling the organization to leverage cloud technologies effectively and securely.
YOUR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Coding and Scripting
- Interact with and read code
- Leveraging scripting tools to automate common infrastructure management and operational tasks
Infrastructure Fundamentals
- Design, implement, administer, and support infrastructure technologies and solutions. These technologies and solutions can include computing, storage, networking, physical infrastructure, software, commercial-of-the-shelf (COTS), and open source packages and solutions. They can also include virtual and cloud computing such a Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), Platform as a Service (PaaS), and Software as a Service (SaaS)
Information Security
- Identify information security risks and the controls that can be used to mitigate threats within solutions and services
- Design solutions and services with security controls embedded, specifically engineered with mitigation of security threats as a core feature
Modern Standards Approach
- Leverage a strong understanding of the most appropriate modern standards and practices, and how they are applied
- Coach and guide others in these standards
Ownership and Initiative
- Take accountability for issues that occur and be proactive in searching for potential problems
- Achieve excellent user outcomes
Problem Management
- Ensure that the right actions are taken to investigate patterns and trends to resolve and anticipate problems
- Coordinate the team to investigate problems, implements solutions, and take preventative measures
Service Focus
- Understand and communicate the bigger picture by taking groups of services and investigating how to get the best of underlying services
Systems Design
- Design systems characterized by high levels of risk, impact, and business or technical complexity
- Control system design practice within an enterprise or industry architecture
- Develop effective implementation and procurements strategies, consistent with business needs
- Ensure adherence to relevant technical strategies, policies, standards, and practices
Systems Integration
- Establish standards and procedures across a service product lifecycle, including the development product lifecycle, and ensure that practitioners adhere to these
- Manage resources to ensure that the systems integration function works effectively
Technical Understanding
- Anticipate and advise on future technology changes that present opportunities for products and platforms
Testing
- Manage testing activities within development or integration activities
- Manage risks and take preventative action when risks become unacceptable
- Manage relationships with other platforms in testing coordination
Troubleshooting and Problem Resolution
- Use lateral thinking to break a problem down into its component parts to identify and diagnose root causes
- Troubleshoot and identify problems across different technology capabilities including computing, storage, networking, physical infrastructure, software, commercial-off-the-shelf software (COTS) and open source software
WHO YOU ARE:
Required
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related field.
- Extensive experience (15+) in infrastructure engineering or a related role
- 5+ years of hands-on experience in data analytics engineering, data governance, or automation, with a focus on "Quality as Code" and "Governance as Code."
- Proven experience in automating data governance processes in a regulated environment (e.g., pharma, biotech, healthcare)
- Certifications: AWS Certified Data Analytics – Specialty, Data(Or Similar)
- Strong skills in developing automated quality checks, governance rules, and compliance controls using scripting languages (e.g., Python, R) and configuration management tools.
- Knowledge of data visualization platforms, analytics workflows, and cloud data services.
- Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, automated testing frameworks, and infrastructure as code (IaC).
- Experience with code versioning, code reviews, and building reusable software components.
- Ability to identify and address gaps in data quality, governance, and analytics compliance through code-based solutions.
- Strong skills in troubleshooting issues within analytics workflows and automated governance systems.
- Proven track record of designing and implementing large-scale infrastructure projects and leading technical teams
- Demonstrated leadership experience, including leading cross-functional teams and large projects
- Significant experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud) and cloud infrastructure
- Deep expertise in network protocols and technologies (TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, VPN, etc.)
- Comprehensive knowledge of server and storage systems
- Advanced proficiency with virtualization technologies
- Deep expertise in cloud architecture, hybrid cloud solutions, and multi-cloud strategies
- Advanced scripting and automation skills
- Superior problem-solving skills and the ability to troubleshoot complex issues
- Advanced analytical skills to evaluate system performance and identify optimization opportunities
- Strong understanding of enterprise architecture and strategic planning
- Ability to align technical initiatives with business objectives and drive strategic infrastructure improvements
- Exceptional leadership and mentorship abilities to guide and develop senior and junior engineers
Preferred
- Advanced certifications (e.g., CCNP, Microsoft Certified, AWS Certified, Azure Solutions Expert)
- Expertise in DevOps practices and tools
- Experience with emerging technologies such as edge computing, AI/ML infrastructure, and software-defined networking (SDN)
- Strong understanding of regulatory and compliance requirements in the industry
- Experience with ITIL and other IT service management frameworks
- Published papers, patents, or significant contributions to the industry
