  • Patient care and preparation: Explain procedures to patients, answer questions, ensure comfort and safety, and position them for the exam.
  • Performing examinations: Conduct echocardiograms (transthoracic, transesophageal, stress) following established protocols to assess the heart's structure, function, and blood flow.
  • Equipment operation: Operate and maintain specialized ultrasound equipment, ensuring it is calibrated and in good working order to produce accurate images.
  • Image analysis and reporting: Capture high-quality images and analyze echocardiographic data. Prepare preliminary reports with findings for review by a supervising cardiologist.
  • Record keeping: Maintain accurate and confidential patient records and test results.
  • Collaboration: Work with cardiologists, physicians, and other healthcare team members to provide comprehensive patient care.
  • Professional development: Stay updated on advancements in echocardiography techniques through continuing education and training.

Required skills and qualifications

  • Education: Typically requires an Associate's or Bachelor's degree in medical sonography or a related field.
  • Certification: Certification such as Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS) or Registered Cardiac Sonographer (RCS) is often required.
  • Technical skills: Proficient in operating and troubleshooting echocardiography equipment.
  • Anatomical knowledge: Strong understanding of cardiac anatomy and physiology.
  • Soft skills: Excellent communication, interpersonal, problem-solving, and attention-to-detail skills.
  • Certifications: CPR or BLS certification is often required.
