Role Description

The Estimation & Costing Engineer / Sr. Engineer will be responsible for evaluating customer drawings, preparing accurate cost estimates, and coordinating with suppliers to ensure competitive pricing for raw materials and bought-out parts (BOPs). The role demands strong analytical ability, composite materials knowledge, and cross-functional coordination to support new RFQs, project costing, and customer submissions.

Key Responsibilities

1. Drawing Study & Technical Understanding

• Review customer drawings, 3D models, and specifications for composite parts.
• Identify critical features, material requirements, tolerances, and manufacturing feasibility.
• Coordinate with design and production teams to clarify technical queries.

2. BOM Extraction & Cost Breakdowns

• Prepare detailed Bill of Materials (BOM) based on drawings and specifications.
• Identify raw materials, consumables, tools, and BOP requirements.
• Estimate machine hours, labour hours, and process steps (layup, curing, trimming, bonding, painting, assembly).

3. RFQ Preparation & Supplier Coordination

• Float RFQs to suppliers for raw materials (fibres, resins, cores), tooling, and BOP components.
• Analyze supplier quotations for cost, lead time, and technical compliance.
• Maintain an updated price database of materials and BOPs.

4. Supplier Negotiation & Finalization

• Negotiate pricing, MOQs, delivery timelines, and payment terms with suppliers.
• Ensure best commercial terms while maintaining quality and reliability.
• Build strong relationships with approved suppliers.

5. Composite Cost Estimation & Pricing

• Prepare detailed cost estimation sheets for composite parts including:
• Material cost
• Labour cost
• Process cost
• Tooling cost
• Overheads
• Margin & final pricing
• Determine process flow and optimize costing based on feasibility.
• Support customer quote submission and commercial discussion.

6. Documentation & Reporting

• Prepare cost comparison sheets and estimation summaries.
• Maintain RFQ trackers, supplier quotations, and costing databases.
• Support internal audits and customer cost reviews.

7. Cross-Functional Coordination

• Work with production, design, procurement, and quality teams for data validation.
• Review cost deviations post-production and update costing norms.

Required Skills & Qualifications

Technical Skills

• Strong knowledge of composite materials (glass fibre, carbon fibre, resins, cores).
• Understanding of molding processes such as hand layup, RTM, vacuum infusion, compression molding.
• Ability to read 2D drawings & 3D CAD models.
• Experience in BOM creation, cost estimation, and supplier management.
• Proficiency in MS Excel, costing tools, ERP (preferred).

Qualifications

• Diploma / B.E. / B.Tech in Mechanical, Production, Polymer, or related field.
• 2–6 years experience in estimation & costing (composite industry preferred).
• Good analytical skills and commercial negotiation capability.
