Key Responsibilities and Duties
1. Preparation and Formulation (Bhaishajya Kalpana)
- Classical Preparation: Prepare a wide range of Ayurvedic formulations, including Churna (powders), Kashaya (decoctions), Asava/Arishta (fermented liquids), Ghee (medicated ghee), Taila (medicated oils), and Bhasma/Rasa (mineral/metallic preparations), strictly following procedures outlined in classical Ayurvedic texts (e.g., Sarangdhara Samhita).
- Raw Material Management: Procure, identify, assess the quality, and ensure the proper storage and preservation of raw herbal, mineral, and animal materials (Dravya) used in formulations.
- Equipment Maintenance: Operate and maintain traditional and modern pharmacy equipment used for grinding, drying, mixing, and heating processes.
2. Quality Control and Compliance
- Quality Assurance: Conduct in-process and final quality checks to ensure the purity, potency, and standardization of all prepared medicines.
- Regulatory Adherence: Ensure all formulation, manufacturing, storage, and labeling practices comply with the Drugs and Cosmetics Act (specifically the provisions for AYUSH drugs) and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) guidelines.
- Documentation: Maintain comprehensive and accurate batch manufacturing records (BMR), inventory logs, dispensing records, and expiry tracking.
3. Dispensing and Patient Interaction
- Dispensing Accuracy: Accurately interpret prescriptions from Ayurvedic Physicians and dispense medicines with correct labeling and quantity.
- Patient Counselling: Provide clear, professional guidance to patients on the proper dosage, administration method (Anupana), timing, and storage of Ayurvedic medicines.
- Safety Check: Monitor and screen for potential drug-herb interactions, contraindications, and patient allergies, especially concerning modern/allopathic drugs, and report issues to the physician.
4. Inventory and Stock Management
- Manage the inventory of finished medicines and raw materials, ensuring optimal stock levels to prevent shortages or expiry losses.
- Supervise the packaging and labeling of products to ensure compliance and prevent contamination.
Education and License
- Mandatory: Diploma in Ayurvedic Pharmacy (D. Pharm Ayurveda) OR Bachelor of Ayurvedic Pharmacy (B. Pharm Ayurveda) OR BAMS with a specialization/experience in Pharmacy (Rasashastra and Bhaishajya Kalpana).
- Required: Registration with the relevant State Pharmacy Council or equivalent regulatory body (depending on state/facility).
Knowledge and Skills
- Deep Ayurvedic Knowledge: In-depth understanding of the fundamental principles of Ayurveda (e.g., Tridosha, Panchabhuta, Dravya Guna, Rasashastra).
- Compounding Precision: Excellent attention to detail and accuracy in measuring, weighing, and traditional compounding methods.
- Regulatory Familiarity: Working knowledge of AYUSH regulations, Schedule M (GMP), and drug storage requirements in India.
- Communication: Strong verbal communication skills (local language proficiency often preferred) for patient counselling and collaboration with physicians.
