Job Description

The Front-End Architect is responsible for defining and guiding the user interface architecture for large-scale, mission-critical web applications. This role ensures that front-end solutions are performant, maintainable, secure, and consistent across modules by leveraging modern JavaScript frameworks and best practices. The Front-End Architect will work closely with product owners, UX designers, backend architects, GIS teams, and DevOps to deliver robust, user-friendly interfaces that integrate seamlessly with APIs, real-time data feeds, and mapping components.

Core Responsibilities

• Define the overall architecture and standards for front-end applications, including framework selection, component design, state management patterns, and integration with backend APIs and real-time services.
• Lead the modernization of legacy front-end applications (for example, Adobe Flex and older web UIs) into modern, component-based SPAs built with Angular or React, ensuring minimal disruption to ongoing operations.
• Design and deliver front-end solutions that can run alongside existing legacy UIs during transition, support phased rollouts across multiple environments and data centres, and meet strict performance and availability requirements.
• Architect reusable UI components, layout systems, and design patterns that support complex, data-rich screens such as grids, dashboards, real-time views, and map-based visualizations.
• Collaborate closely with backend, integration, and GIS teams to define API contracts, data models, and mapping integrations (including ESRI or similar map libraries) that are reliable and efficient for front-end consumption.
• Ensure front-end applications are built with strong security practices, including secure handling of authentication/authorization tokens, input validation, output encoding, and protection against common web vulnerabilities.
• Establish coding standards, UI architecture guidelines, and best practices for component design, state management, error handling, logging, testing, and performance optimization.
• Conduct design and code reviews for front-end solutions and provide mentoring and guidance to development teams to ensure consistency and quality.

Technical Skills

• Expert-level proficiency in modern JavaScript/TypeScript and deep understanding of browser fundamentals (DOM, rendering pipeline, event loop, performance profiling, security constraints).
• Strong hands-on experience with at least one major SPA framework (Angular or React) and its ecosystem (routing, forms, state management, testing).
• Solid experience architecting large-scale, modular front-end applications, including component-based design, reusable UI libraries, and shared design systems.
• Experience in modernizing legacy UIs (for example, from Flex/older web stacks) to SPA frameworks, including strategies for co-existence and phased migration.
• Strong understanding of integrating front-end applications with RESTful APIs and real-time communication mechanisms (for example, WebSockets, SignalR, Server-Sent Events), including resilience and error handling patterns.
• Hands-on experience with front-end build and tooling ecosystems (for example, Webpack, Vite, Angular CLI, npm/yarn, linting, unit testing, end-to-end testing).
• Good understanding of front-end security fundamentals, including authentication flows, token handling, CSRF, XSS, and content security considerations.
• Experience with responsive design and cross-browser compatibility to ensure consistent behaviour across devices, resolutions, and browsers.

Experience and Soft Skills

• 10+ years of experience in front-end or full-stack development, with at least 3-4 years in a lead or architect role focusing on modern web applications.
• Proven experience designing and delivering complex, data-intensive or real-time front-end applications in mission-critical or high-availability environments.
• Strong leadership abilities to guide front-end engineers, lead design and code reviews, and drive architectural decisions.
• Excellent communication skills with the ability to collaborate with product, UX, backend, GIS, DevOps, and security teams, and to clearly articulate front-end architecture decisions to technical and non-technical stakeholders.

SHOULD HAVE

Responsibilities

• Work with DevOps and infrastructure teams to define how front-end applications are built, packaged, configured per environment, and deployed using CI/CD pipelines.
• Collaborate with UX and product teams to balance usability, visual design, performance, and technical feasibility, ensuring that architectural choices support current and future UX needs.
• Monitor and troubleshoot front-end performance and stability using browser developer tools and monitoring platforms, and proactively address issues related to rendering, memory usage, network performance, and JavaScript execution.

Technical Skills

• Experience with front-end performance optimization techniques such as bundle analysis, code splitting, lazy loading, caching strategies, minimizing network round trips, and optimizing rendering for data-heavy screens.
• Familiarity with integrating mapping libraries and GIS components (for example, ESRI JavaScript API or similar) into web applications to display layers, markers, and real-time updates.
• Working knowledge of accessibility standards (for example, WCAG) and practices for building accessible UIs, including ARIA usage, keyboard navigation, and semantic HTML.
• Familiarity with CI/CD practices for front-end applications, including automated builds, testing, quality gates, and environment-based deployments.

Experience

• Prior involvement in modernization projects where legacy front ends were migrated to Angular or React while maintaining business continuity.
• Experience working in environments with multiple data centres, strict SLAs, and stringent security and compliance requirements

Secondary Skills :

NICE TO HAVE

Technical Skills and Experience

• Exposure to other front-end frameworks or libraries (for example, Vue, Svelte, or micro-frontend architectures) and the ability to choose the right approach per context.
• Experience with design systems or component libraries (for example, Material, Bootstrap, or custom design systems) and tools such as Storybook for UI documentation and collaboration.
• Familiarity with analytics and user behaviour tracking tools (for example, application insights, web analytics) to inform UX and performance improvements.
