Head Engineering Design

Job Purpose

Managing a team of In-house engineering team consisting of Civil & structural engineers, electrical engineers, Protection specialists, Drafting team and External specialist consultants. For EHV switchyards up to 765 kV (Indoor, AIS & GIS substations) , Transmission lines , Bay extensions, Traction substations, Metro railway electrification.

Roles & Responsibilities

Key Responsibility Areas

Objective Key Responsibilities (OKRs)

• Lead and manage the design and engineering team for Transmission & Distribution (T&D) and Metro Railways projects (Domestic & International).
• Oversee the design and detailed engineering for EHV switchyards (up to 765 kV), transmission lines, bay extensions, traction substations, and metro railway electrification.
• Ensure successful project execution by collaborating with internal teams, consultants, and vendors, from design to commissioning and handover.
• Drive strategic collaborations with OEMs, optimize costs, and deliver technical excellence.

Design & Engineering (New & Ongoing Projects):

• Design and detailed engineering for projects, including drawing approvals, vendor engineering reviews, and equipment approvals with consultants.
• Support procurement, construction, and commissioning teams, ensuring timely project delivery and addressing extra claim justifications.

Pre-Bid Tenders:

• Lead strategic tie-ups with key OEMs, perform quantity take-offs, propose alternate designs, optimize costs, and engage in technical discussions with customers.

Team Development & Process Standardization:

• Develop and standardize processes for the engineering team, focusing on productivity improvements and competency development.

Sub-Consultant Collaboration:

• Establish partnerships with sub-consultants for specialized services such as transmission lines, third-rail systems, etc.

Collaboration with Stakeholders:

• Foster close collaboration with top management, business development, tendering functions, and project/site management leaders.

Technology Adoption:

• Spearhead the adoption of the latest technology and tools for project deliverables, ensuring efficiency and innovation.

Team Manager Responsibilities

• Manage a diverse in-house team consisting of civil & structural engineers, electrical engineers, protection specialists, drafting team, and external specialist consultants.
• Provide leadership, mentorship, and guidance to team members, ensuring continuous development and high performance.
• Ensure team alignment with project goals, timelines, and quality standards.

Key Performance Indicators

• Timely completion of design and engineering deliverables for ongoing and new projects.
• Successful execution of pre-bid tender activities, including cost optimization and customer satisfaction.
• Development and implementation of standardized processes and procedures for the engineering team.
• Growth in team competency and productivity.
• Adoption and integration of new technology/tools in project design and execution.

Organizational Accountabilities

• Ensure adherence to company policies, procedures, and quality standards across all design and engineering activities.
• Maintain effective communication and coordination with internal teams and external stakeholders to ensure seamless project execution.

Job Qualifications and Requirements

Knowledge and Experience

Extensive experience (15+ years) in design and engineering, particularly in EHV switchyards, transmission lines, metro railway electrification, and related fields.

Strong knowledge of various engineering disciplines, including electrical, civil, and protection systems.

Experience in managing large, multidisciplinary teams and driving cross-functional collaboration.

Expertise in using design and engineering software/tools, such as AutoCAD, ETAP, and other industry-specific software.

Education and Certifications

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or related fields.
• Relevant certifications in project management, design engineering, would be an added advantage.
