Position: Healthcare Attendant

Department: Patient Support Services

Reports to: Nursing Supervisor or Manager

Job Summary: The Healthcare Attendant, also known as a Patient Care Attendant or Healthcare Support Worker, plays a vital role in providing direct care and support to patients within a healthcare facility. They assist with daily activities, ensuring patients' well-being, comfort, and safety while promoting a positive and healing environment.

Key Responsibilities:
Patient Care: Provide direct care and assistance to patients, including bathing, grooming, dressing, feeding, and toileting, following established protocols and individual care plans. Assist with mobility and transfers as necessary.

Vital Signs Monitoring: Measure and record patients' vital signs, such as temperature, pulse rate, blood pressure, and respiration rate, and report any abnormalities or changes to the nursing staff.

Patient Safety: Maintain a safe environment for patients by regularly monitoring patient movement, assisting with fall prevention measures, and promptly addressing any hazards or potential risks.

Support with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs): Help patients with ADLs, including eating, drinking, ambulation, and personal hygiene. Provide emotional support and engage patients in conversation and activities to promote social interaction and mental well-being.

Patient Transport: Assist in transporting patients to and from various departments within the healthcare facility for tests, procedures, or appointments while ensuring their comfort and safety.

Documentation: Accurately document patient care activities, vital signs, intake and output measurements, and any other pertinent information in the patient's medical record or designated documentation system.

Equipment and Supply Management: Ensure the availability and proper functioning of patient care equipment and supplies. Restock patient rooms with necessary items and notify the appropriate personnel of any deficiencies or malfunctioning equipment.

Infection Control: Adhere to infection control protocols, including proper hand hygiene, the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and maintaining a clean and sanitized environment.

Communication and Collaboration: Effectively communicate and collaborate with the nursing staff and interdisciplinary team members to provide comprehensive patient care. Report any changes in patient condition or concerns promptly.

Patient Advocacy: Advocate for patients' needs and preferences, respecting their privacy, dignity, and cultural beliefs. Serve as a liaison between patients, families, and healthcare providers to ensure effective communication and understanding.

Qualifications and Skills:

- High school diploma or equivalent. Completion of a recognized healthcare assistant or nursing assistant training program is preferred.
- Previous experience as a healthcare attendant, nursing assistant, or similar role is advantageous.
- Empathy, compassion, and the ability to provide patient-centered care with sensitivity and respect.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to interact effectively with patients, families, and healthcare professionals.
- Basic knowledge of medical terminology and an understanding of healthcare procedures and protocols.
- Physical stamina and the ability to lift, move, and assist patients with mobility as required.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced healthcare environment.
- Flexibility to work different shifts, including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays, as needed.
