Operation Theatre Technician

**Position Overview**:
An **Operating Theater Technician**, also known as a Surgical Technologist or Operating Room Technician, plays a vital role in ensuring the smooth and efficient functioning of the operating room. They work alongside surgical teams to provide technical support before, during, and after surgical procedures. Operating Theater Technicians assist in preparing the operating room, arranging surgical equipment, and ensuring the sterile environment necessary for surgical procedures.

**Qualifications**:

- BSc in Operating Theater Technology (OT), Diploma in OT, or equivalent qualification in OT Anesthesia.
- Knowledge of medical terminology, surgical instruments, and sterile techniques.
- Understanding of surgical procedures and protocols.
- Ability to work well under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong attention to detail and a commitment to maintaining a sterile environment.
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
- Willingness to work irregular hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.

**Responsibilities**:
**Preoperative Preparation**:

- Assist in setting up the operating room, ensuring all necessary equipment and supplies are available.
- Arrange surgical instruments and supplies in the required order, anticipating the needs of the surgical team.
- Prepare sterile drapes, gloves, and gowns for the surgical team.

**Intraoperative Support**:

- Assist the surgical team in donning sterile attire and maintaining a sterile field.
- Hand instruments and supplies to surgeons and other team members during procedures.
- Monitor and manage surgical equipment, including lights, monitors, and anesthesia machines.
- Prepare and handle specimens for laboratory analysis.
- Maintain accurate counts of sponges, needles, and instruments to ensure nothing is left inside the patient.

**Postoperative Tasks**:

- Assist in transferring the patient to the recovery area, ensuring their safety and comfort.
- Assist in cleaning and restocking the operating room after a procedure.
- Properly dispose of biohazardous waste and contaminated materials.
- Participate in debriefings with the surgical team to discuss the procedure and identify areas for improvement.

**Sterilization and Equipment Maintenance**:

- Sterilize and disinfect surgical instruments and equipment following established protocols.
- Maintain inventory of surgical supplies and equipment, ensuring availability for upcoming procedures.
- Collaborate with the central sterile supply department to ensure a consistent supply of sterile items.

**Quality and Safety**:

- Adhere to infection control protocols and maintain a sterile environment at all times.
- Ensure compliance with safety regulations and protocols to minimize risks to patients and staff.
- Report any equipment malfunctions, safety hazards, or potential issues promptly.

**Professional Development**:

- Stay up to date with advancements in surgical technology, techniques, and procedures.
- Attend workshops, seminars, and training sessions to enhance skills and knowledge.

**Communication and Teamwork**:

- Communicate effectively with surgical team members, nurses, and other healthcare professionals.
- Collaborate closely with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and nurses to ensure efficient workflow.

**Ethical and Legal Considerations**:

- Maintain patient confidentiality and adhere to ethical and legal standards in patient care.
