Create sketches and models of proposed designs, including constructing scale models or computer models for visualization purposes
- Review building plans to determine if structures will withstand natural disasters or meet safety codes
- Prepare reports detailing structural designs, including materials used, load-bearing capacity, and construction methods used
- Design structures such as buildings and bridges based on architectural plans and engineering requirements
- Conduct stress tests on existing structures to identify areas of weakness or vulnerability
- Create drawings that show how each element of a structure will be constructed and how it will be assembled with other elements
- Evaluate the strength of materials used in construction to ensure they meet industry standards
- Calculate the amount of material needed to build structures according to specifications
- Identify possible design flaws in existing structures and recommending improvements
- Design structures, such as buildings or bridges
- Create structural models by using computer-aided design software
- Measure loads and pressures caused by environmental or human influence
- Follow construction safety guidelines
- Choose appropriate materials based on structural specifications
- Monitor on-site construction processes and supervise construction workers
- Prepare and allocate budgets
- Track and report on project progress
- Collaborate with contractors and project managers
