**Responsibilities**:

- **Programming CNC Machines**: Using programming languages like G-code or machine-specific software, a CNC programmer writes the instructions that tell the machine how to operate.
- **Reading Technical Drawings**: They interpret blueprints and CAD drawings to understand the dimensions, tolerances, and machining operations required.
- **Tool Selection**: They choose the right cutting tools and set up the machine to ensure the part is machined correctly.
- **Machine Setup**: CNC programmers often help set up the machines before production runs, which may involve installing tools, loading materials, and calibrating the equipment.
- **Optimizing Processes**: They look for ways to optimize machine speed, reduce wear on tools, and increase efficiency while maintaining high-quality standards.
- **Quality Control**: Checking the accuracy and quality of parts produced by the CNC machine through measurements and tests. They may use tools like micrometers or coordinate-measuring machines (CMM).
- **Troubleshooting**: If a problem occurs with the machining process (such as incorrect dimensions or machine errors), the programmer identifies the issue and corrects the code or machine setup.
- **Collaboration**: CNC programmers work closely with engineers, machinists, and other team members to ensure the design and manufacturing processes align.

**Skills and Knowledge Required**:

- **Proficiency in CNC Programming Languages**: Knowledge of G-code, M-code, and other machine-specific languages.
- **Understanding of CAD/CAM Software**: Familiarity with software like AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or Fusion 360 to generate designs and tool paths.
- **Mechanical Aptitude**: A strong understanding of mechanical processes and machining techniques.
- **Attention to Detail**: Precision is key in CNC programming, as even small errors can result in costly mistakes.
- **Mathematical Skills**: Proficiency in geometry and trigonometry for calculating cutting paths, tool angles, etc.

**Tools and Software Commonly Used**:

- **CAD/CAM Software** (like SolidWorks, Mastercam, or Fusion 360)
- **CNC Control Software** (like Siemens, Fanuc, or Haas)
- **Measuring Instruments** (like micrometers, calipers, CMM)
