Job description1. Programming and Calibration
- Developing and Writing CMM Programs: Create and modify CMM programs to perform accurate measurements on various parts. This often involves writing code using software specific to the CMM (such as PC-DMIS, Calypso, or others).
- CMM Calibration: Ensure the CMM machine is properly calibrated to maintain measurement accuracy. This includes calibrating probes, sensors, and software.
2. Performing Inspections
- Conducting Measurements: Use the CMM to measure parts, ensuring they meet required specifications and tolerances. This involves selecting the correct probes, touch points, and settings for accurate measurement.
- Analyzing Results: Compare measured data with CAD files or blueprints to verify part conformity and document the results.
3. Troubleshooting and Maintenance
- Maintaining Equipment: Ensure the CMM machine is properly maintained, including cleaning, calibration, and repairs.
- Troubleshooting: Identify and troubleshoot any issues with the CMM system, including problems with mechanical components, software, or probes.
4. Quality Control and Reporting
- Data Analysis: Analyze measurement data to identify trends, inconsistencies, or areas where quality could be improved. This often involves using statistical tools or software to process the data.
- Creating Inspection Reports: Generate detailed inspection reports that outline measurement results, deviations, and recommendations for corrective actions.
- Compliance and Documentation: Ensure that all measurements and processes comply with industry standards, company procedures, and customer specifications.
5. Collaboration and Communication
- Working with Design and Manufacturing Teams: Communicate with engineers, designers, and operators to ensure that the CMM system is being used optimally and that parts are designed for manufacturability and ease of inspection.
- Training: Provide training and support to other staff members who may be using the CMM system, including operators and quality control personnel.
6. Software and Data Management
- Software Proficiency: Be proficient in the use of CMM programming software and related CAD software, as the engineer often has to create or modify measurement routines based on CAD files.
- Data Storage: Manage and maintain measurement data, ensuring it is properly archived and accessible for future analysis, audits, or quality control reviews.
7. Continuous Improvement
- Process Improvement: Continuously seek ways to improve the efficiency and accuracy of CMM operations. This may involve optimizing CMM programs, exploring new measurement technologies, or recommending process changes.
- Upgrading Technology: Stay up to date with advancements in CMM technology and incorporate newer, more efficient equipment or software tools as necessary.
