Casualty staff in a hospital are responsible for providing initial treatment for illnesses and injuries that may be life-threatening. They work in the casualty department, which is where people who are hurt in accidents or suddenly become ill go for urgent treatment.
Checks that all life-saving equipment is working properly. They also provide special care to patients, such as endo-trachial suction.
- Triage cases based on urgency and need
- Assess patient needs
- Develop a patient care plan
- Clean wounds and reset bones
- Draw blood for testing
- Start intravenous lines (IVs)
- Administer medication as instructed by physicians
- Maintain up-to-date patient records
- Monitor patient vital signs
- Chart
- Discharge
Casualty nurses also work with other emergency healthcare professionals to help patients.
